Venice Grand Canal Boat Tour

Venice, Italy

My Rating
2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better

My Review

This tour was not as exciting as the Venice Walking Tour and Gondola Ride. The boat tour took us down the Grand Canal, so the sights were exactly what I saw on the Vaporetto #1 or #2. It was nice to have a tour guide pointing out the most famous buildings along the canal, and she told us about how the gondolas were built, and some of the history. But somehow this tour seemed too short (just over an hour on the boat) and lacking in detail for the price Viator charged (around US$55). Using a good tour book and taking the vaporetto #1 down the Grand Canal for 7 Euros would've been about the same as this tour. Sorry to be a bit blunt, but this tour was not so exciting.

Venice Walking Tour and Gondola Ride

Venice, Italy

4 star rating: Recommended

My Review

This tour was a great introduction to Italy. The guide was a local Venetian person and she knew a lot about the area. We took a short was through the San Marco and San Polo neighborhoods and saw the Bovolo Staircase. I wish we could've seen Marco Polo's house but that wasn't on the walking tour. The gondola ride was fun and I'm glad it was part of the tour.

Tuscany in One Day Sightseeing Tour

Florence, Italy

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

This was a fantastic 12-hour tour and the perfect way to see some of the small towns around Florence (Siena, Pisa, San Gimignano), which were city-states that were at war with Florence in the Middle Ages. The Siena Cathedral was absolutely stunning, gothic I think, with incredible marble work on the floors, sculptures and an incredible Library of hand-painted parchment paper books from the 14th or 15th century. We had lunch at a Chianti winery and tasted 4 different wines, and that was a very nice break in the middle of the day. Best of all was Barbara our tour guide, a native of Florence. The local company who ran this tour was Walkabout, and the entire day was extremely well-planned. They had a really nice air-conditioned bus, then had a local tour guide in Siena, they showed us a documentary on the bus about the Pallio horse race, and even took us on a little "train" ride in Pisa. I definitely recommend climbing the Leaning Tower of Pisa. This was an excellent tour and I am so glad I took it!! It was a perfect day in Tuscany!
