Viator did a great job of setting up the experience and their customer service agent really went the extra mile for us, but the company Viator subcontracted to actually deliver the tour had issues. We arrived on time at the train station, were told our electronic voucher was all we needed, waited 30 minutes to board the bus, only to find out when we got to the front of the line that we actually DID need paper vouchers (contradicting Viator and their own employees). We then had to sprint inside the station, where an incredibly rude employee printed our vouchers and made sure we knew how annoyed he was to help us. Once onboard, the tour itself was good and the guide excellent, but the disorganized start was a bit of a downer. Also, although we started 30+ minutes late, the guide announced the end time would remain the same, leaving those onboard with the feeling that our trip had just been truncated by 30 minutes because of their disorganization. Viator's subcontractors usually are awesome but this one was a bit of a disappointment.
Pompeii was absolutely stunning and one of the highlights of our trip to Italy. The tour was well-organized and our facilitator (Mario) was excellent. The only thing I would skip next time is the stop at Mt. Vesuvius on the way to Pompeii... it added a lot of time to the trip and felt like a glorified "tourist trap." Otherwise it was stellar!
Tour guide (Nicholas) was topnotch and the entire experience was outstanding. Be prepared to walk (a lot), but believe me it is worth it... this guided tour was a highlight of our trip to Italy and if we were to do it all over again this definitely stays at the top of the list. Well organized, facilitated and reasonably priced. The tour guide is the key to the whole experience and Nicholas was outstanding.
