Post Hurricane Katrina Tour

Tour / Activity

My Rating: 5 star rating: Highly Recommended

Location: New Orleans, Louisiana

My Review: What a great tour operator! When I couldn't be picked up at my original location at the hotel entrance due to buses blocking the way, they immediately made other arrangements. The tour guide was knowledgeable and very personable. She explained not only what happened during Katrina, but why it happened. There were also supplemental maps and pictures that helped tell the story. This tour is small group in a van, not a large busload. That means there are a lot of chances to ask questions and interact. If you want to gain an understanding of Katrina and its continuing impact, take this tour.

Tour of Oak Alley Plantation

Tour / Activity

My Rating: 4 star rating: Recommended

Location: New Orleans, Louisiana

My Review: The bus driver gave us an mini tour as we drove from the city out to Oak Alley. I wasn't expecting that and it was very nice. The plantation grounds, the trees and the house are lovely. The tour at the house was nice, but could have been done a little more efficiently, as our tour was stuck out on the veranda while another tour was upstairs. Since we had a deadline to get back to the bus, this wasted valuable time that could have been spent exploring the grounds, shopping or eating.

New Orleans Cooking Class

Tour / Activity

My Rating: 5 star rating: Highly Recommended

Location: New Orleans, Louisiana

My Review: A first class experience and a lot of fun. Comfortable setting with great food. New Orleans is a city with a cuisine all its own. Not only was this a cooking lesson, but a lesson about the history of the place, the people and the food. I would recommend this cooking class to anyone visiting New Orleans.

Swamp and Bayou Sightseeing Tour

Tour / Activity

My Rating: 4 star rating: Recommended

Location: New Orleans, Louisiana

My Review: I lost count of all the alligators we saw. We also saw lots of birds and several turtles. Our boat captain did a wonderful job of teaching about the ecosystem and the plants, animals and people who make their living in the swamp. It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.

Steamboat Natchez Harbor Cruise

Tour / Activity

My Rating: 4 star rating: Recommended

Location: New Orleans, Louisiana

My Review: I loved the calliope and the steam whistle. The narrator was very informative. I was surprised at how much we could see from the boat. It was a great way to get orientated to the area. I went on a lunch cruise. There was plenty of food and the meal was all inclusive. Very nice.

Ancient Ostia Small Group Day Trip from Rome

Tour / Activity

My Rating: 5 star rating: Highly Recommended

Location: Rome, Italy

My Review: We had a very small group, four, and the tour still went without there even being a question about it. The tour left our meeting place on time and we returned on time. We had a wonderful guide who brought Ostia to life for us. She was knowledgeable and personable. We had a lot of fun exploring the ruins with her. Mid-tour we took a short break and were given time to shop in the bookstore and to buy refreshments. Then we visited the on-site museum with our guide before continuing our walk among the ruins. Our guide answered our questions and carried a reference guide she used if we asked something she didn't know off the top of her head. We asked a lot of questions and were glad to get good answers. She gave us a wonderful tour of Ostia Antica, and we were given our train tickets and the option of staying and exploring on our own, something no one in our group did. This was the very best of the tours we took. It was well worth having a guide in order to use our time there to the fullest. This is a walking tour, so wear good shoes and be prepared for some walking. Even after going to Pompeii and Herculaneum like we did, we felt it was well worth going to Ostia Antica.

Catacombs and Roman Countryside Half-Day Walking Tour

Tour / Activity

My Rating: 5 star rating: Highly Recommended

Location: Rome, Italy

My Review: We thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Not only did we have an interesting tour through the Catacombs of St. Callixtus, a stop on the Appian Way, and a visit to Aqueduct Park, but we also had a stop at Cecelia's Tomb. Our guide was knowledgeable and pointed out many sites as we drove to and from our stops. This is billed as a walking tour, but there was more driving than walking which was good since we had just spend two days on our feet. We saw a lot of things that would have been difficult to see in the same amount of time using public transportation and even if we could have gotten there, having a guide was a real asset. The tour was even better and more worthwhile than we anticipated. I would highly recommend it.
