Skip the Line: Florence Accademia and Uffizi Gallery Tour

My Review

It all depends on whom you get. For the Academia, we had a guide who was curt, impatient, and did not tell all the David stories I remember from a previous visit. When the same guide showed up for the Uffizi tour, we jumped into another group. This turned out to be a small no-earphone group with a lady with a cane, who had actually written a guidebook on Uffizi. She was a charismatic personality, wonderful presenter, and gave us an art history course in the space of a couple of hours--then threw in a tour around town.

This worked well. The tour guide shepherded us through security, ticketing, restrooms and obtaining a wheelchair. Then we were on our own, as planned.

Roman Sites Small Group Day Trip from Avignon

Avignon, France

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

Marion was a great guide. The amphitheater in Nimes was built a few decades after Rome's and seemed a bit of an afterthought if you've been through the later. The Pont du Gard Roman bridge, though, was stunning, especially in the late afternoon sun, situated over a beautifully blue river in acres of park with the towers of a medieval town in the distance.

Lavender and Villages in Provence Small Group Day Trip

Avignon, France

My Review

The travel guide, Marion, made this a treat. There's a lavender museum where you see distillation design through history, but the best reason for going is the amazing natural and architectural beauty of Rouissilon, with its red cliffs set against green landscape

Van Gogh in Provence Small Group Day Trip

Avignon, France

My Rating
4 star rating: Recommended

My Review

The trip takes you to Arles where you can see a Roman amphitheater, van Gogh's cafe, Picasso's hotel, and the hospital to which van Gogh repaired after cutting his ear. There is a good side-trip to van Gogh's psychiatric hospital and nearby Roman ruins. I was intrigued by the 2nd century BC village near the ruins, but this was not included on the tour. Worth the trip, but would have appreciated a little more time in Arles...seemed a bit rushed. Also, don't expect anything but the most superficial coverage of van Gogh himself--which was appropriate since some of the Asian people on the tour had never heard of him. I'd recommend that Viator add a tour to the unseen village, and perhaps a tour dedicated to the life of van Gogh.

Litchfield National Park Day Tour from Darwin

The highlight are the Billabongs and rock pools we stopped at. Come prepared for swimming! The trip to/from Darwin is long and less rewarding, so also come prepared to snooze.

Kakadu, Nourlangie and Yellow Waters Tour with Optional Return Flight to Darwin

Darwin, Australia

My Rating

My Review
The bus operator had a polished, informative and entertaining talk, as well as nature DVDs to fill in the long drive to/from Darwin. The highlights are the cruise on the Yellow Water estuary (from a self-confessed bird nerd) and the huge termite mounds.
