The hike part of the tour was more of a stroll up a small hill to look at where we would be kayaking and so a long way short of what we were expecting. That aside it was a great day ,the kyaking to the island of Chinaman's Hat more than made up for the lack of hiking. Our guide was a really nice guy who looked after us well and was a font of all knowledge. This trip is really worth doing.
The trip was okay. The flight was good and everything was well organised, our guide for the day was outstanding. Not only was she very knowledgeable, but had a very dry sense of humour which really lifted the trip. The lava flow had reached the sea, but we could not get closer than a mile from the flow because it was on private property. The crater of the volcano is now considered too dangerous to approach because of the gas coming from the crater and so had to be viewed from the visitor's centre about half a mile away. The crater was impressive but you could not see down into the centre where the magma was. I suppose because of the build up the tour was given, we were slightly disappointed by the reality, otherwise I am sure we would have been impressed by what we saw. Overall it was a trip that we were glad that we had done, just be prepared not to see some of the more spectacular sights associated with an active volcano.
