I recently signed up for this tour quite last minute when I realized I had an extra day in Munich. It was a very quick sign up even on short notice. I attended the tour on 13 Jul 13 with a tour guide named Kevin from Houston,Texas. Kevin was an amazing guide who had studied German history and language in University and moved to Munich in 2005 to live the culture. He has been a Dachau tour guide since then and was extremely passionate about this subject. He stated right from the start that this tour would not be all about evil and murder but more about humanity, realism and understanding how and why history occurred as it did. It made the tour very interesting and a little more personal. I also need to say that he was emphatic about being respectful of the site and forbid any self portraits or posed pictures on his tour. He stated that this was disrespectful to the site and the memorial. It was quite clear he was not joking
The tour itself was outstanding. Transportation was well coordinated with very little standing around time. There were 13 people on the tour which made for a great tour size. You were able to hear and see Kevin at each point of interest. There is quite a bit of walking on this tour which does make it difficult for anyone with mobility issues. We had one older woman who had some issues but Kevin made sure to give her a good head start to the next point while the rest of us were wandering in the current location.
Overall the Dachau tour was about 2.5-3 hours long with an hour of travel to and from. Total of 4.5 hours all together.
It was a very hot sunny day so I would recommend sun screen or a hat and bring some water with you. Nothing much to buy but I did purchase the memorial book for 15 euros(cash only)while we walked around, which is NOT available in the shop at the info centre. it contains all the pictures, stories and history of the memorial site with all the money going back to the memorial fund of Dachau. Highly recommend it.
My husband, 18 yr old daughter and I booked this trip weeks before we arrived. I am so glad we did as the actual lineups were horrendous and we were thrilled to be able to skip the line! Our guide was fantastic, from Australia, funny and very interesting to listen too. He had some great historical information but also funny stories to tell about the tower and the creation. We had lots of time to explore the tower, including the highest level and could stay as long as we wanted. We took the 5:30pm tour and stayed until after sunset which was amazing. Highly recommend this tour!
My husband, 18 yr old daughter and I booked this tour months before our trip as this was the one trip my daughter really wanted to do. Once we arrived and saw the line ups that snaked around the block I was so glad we had pre-booked. Our guide was a fun loving young fellow from New Jersey and he made the tour a lot of fun. He had some great historical details interspersed with fun facts and very funny stories. The tour was an excellent size (19) and was all ages. He allowed us to really take our time and spend the time we needed to explore and take the photos we wanted. My daughter was extremely satisfied with this tour as were my husband and I. I would definitely book another trip with this company and highly recommend them to friends and family.
