Ancient Ostia Half-Day Trip from Rome

Rome, Italy

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

As long as you are interested in walking around in ruins, this is a fantastic tour. Our guide was knowledgeable and passionate about history and archeology of the area, and a font of interesting details. He also had a good sense of humor and did his best to balance showing us as much as he could with finding us shade and keeping us cool on a very hot, sunny summer day. I both learned a lot and enjoyed a day out away from the rush and hubbub of Rome with a little bit of the sea breezes blowing in.

Ancient Rome and Colosseum Tour: Underground Chambers, Arena and Upper Tier

Rome, Italy

My Rating
4 star rating: Recommended

My Review

This tour was very worthwhile with us getting to see areas of the Colosseum that are not accessible without a guide. Also, having the guides (two small tours sometimes stopped at the same places and one of the two guides would talk to all of us) helped us understand and appreciate far more about what we were seeing than we would have on our own. I would caution anyone with knee or other mobility problems that this tour does involve quite a lot of climbing up and down stairs and walking around. There is also not much shade on a hot summer day, so be prepared for that as well. However, if you are prepared for the weather and like walking, this is a great tour.

Skip the Line: Crypts and Roman Catacombs Small Group Walking Tour

Rome, Italy

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

This tour took us to three places, moving us around by bus, and just having someone to guide us in the maze of the catacombs alone made it worthwhile. Not for claustrophobes or people who are made uncomfortable by the sight of bones, but otherwise very interesting. I learned a lot about early Christianity, and a couple of hours spent down underground in the nice, cool air was a pleasant relief from the August heat in Rome.

Skip the Line: Vatican Museums Small-Group Tour including Sistine Chapel and St Peter's Basilica

Rome, Italy

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

Worth every penny. Just skipping the long, long lines to both the museums and the basilica was probably worth half the price. You do still spend some time lining up, but it is much, much smoother and quicker than doing this without a tour. The guide was also quite knowledgeable and helped us understand what we were seeing in a way that anyone but an art history major or a church history expert wouldn't be able to on their own. About the only thing I wish had been done differently was to have allowed us maybe 5 minutes or so in the modern art section before going into the Sistine Chapel.
