A very nice trip - my wife and I enjoyed it much more than the castles trip. However, I wish the guide had given us more historical details; she seemed to know a lot already. We decided to pay the extra money for the guide, but if you don't want to, you can get a Land ticket from Munich good for Salzburg as well and that will save you some money.

Royal Castles of Neuschwanstein and Linderhof Day Tour from Munich

My wife and I took the trip in Sept but were disappointed: the guide was very bad - he didn't talk about either of the castles much, just some facts about Munich/Bavaria and that's it; Linderhof was actually prettier than Neuschwanstein, but the Neuschwanstein village was nicer and there was another palace to visit (also looked nicer than Neuschwanstein). All the pictures of the Neuschwanstein castle that you see must be taken from a cable car that goes up and down the mountains (but with a huge zoom) so don't expect to see the same kind of view you see in calendars and postcards.
