Corcovado Mountain and Christ Redeemer Statue Half-Day Tour

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

My Rating
2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better

My Review

This wasn't really a good value. The tour saved us from standing in line to buy tickets, BUT we still had to wait 40 minutes after our group arrived until we got on the train. And then you have to wait again at the top to come down, so being on a tour didn't really save any time or hassle. You can book your train departure tickets in advance on the internet. The train isn't that great -- mostly you're in the forest, with only a few viewpoints. An alternative is to take a van from Praca do Lido (near Posto 2 on Copacabana Beach) to the station half-way up the hill, and then transfer to the National Park vans which take you to the top. I don't know how the price compares, but we would probably do that next time.

Take this class -- it was wonderful! The chef, Simone, is a delightful, charming woman who makes you feel instantly at home. Within 5 minutes, our group of strangers had become friends. We made two appetizers and a seafood entrée -- all delicious. Lots of fun. Do it for sure.

Favela Tour in Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

My Rating
3 star rating: Worth doing

My Review

This was interesting, especially to see the progress the favelas have made over the past twenty years or so (with electricity, running water, shops and buses now). But don't feel scared to visit these areas on your own. The people are friendly and it felt very safe.

Isla Negra and Pablo Neruda Museum Day Trip from Santiago

Santiago, Chile

My Rating
2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better

My Review

The museum was as interesting as we had hoped, but we thought it was really silly that Viators provided both a driver and a guide, when the museum had its own audio tour. We really only needed a driver, which would have brought the cost down considerably. There was also some confusion about exactly what our itinerary would be. Had we known that they could have driven us to Valparaiso the same day, we could have saved an extra day and quite a bit of money.

Cousino Macul and Concha y Toro Wineries Day Trip from Santiago

Santiago, Chile

My Rating
2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better

My Review

The wineries were very interesting and their guides provided a lot of good information in a fun way -- we liked both tours. But why did Viators send both a driver and a guide for this tour? We only needed a driver! The guide just sat around and waited for us while we were on our tours. She was a nice lady, but paying for two people to accompany us made the price of this tour much higher than it should have been.

Small-Group Santiago Food and Market Tour Including Mercado Central

Santiago, Chile

My Rating
3 star rating: Worth doing

My Review

We enjoyed our day, but we visited too many markets that were pretty much the same. I would suggest more variety. Our favorite thing was Mote con Huesillo, and delicious, refreshing drink made with peach juice, a whole peach, and barley.

Hydra, Poros and Egina Day Cruise from Athens

Athens, Greece

My Rating
4 star rating: Recommended

My Review

Once we got on the boat, this was a great trip. But we spent an extra 45 minutes on the bus because Viators changed the departure harbor at the last minute, so we spent 3 hours on the bus rather than about one hour. But the islands we visited were lovely, fun to walk around, and the full moon rising over the sea on the way back to Athens was stunning!

Delphi Day Trip from Athens

Athens, Greece

My Rating
4 star rating: Recommended

My Review

An interesting, informative day with a very knowledgeable guide. We would have liked more time at the site itself. Those of us who wanted to walk to the top to see the stadium had to run back to get to the bus on time. I would also have liked to visit the Athena shrine at the bottom of the hill, rather than just driving by. It has one of the most intact temples, but we only got a glimpse of it from the bus window. Although the view from the lunch break was nice and the food was good, maybe a faster lunch stop could be arranged so people had more time at the site itself.

Athens Small-Group Food Tour

Athens, Greece

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

Take this tour for sure! Our guide was fantastic, the routing is good and just the right pace. Every shop or cafe we visited was unique and something we would not have found on our own. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who visits Athens. It gave us a chance to see a part of the city that is off the normal tourist route, and to interact with shopkeepers and chefs in an intimate way.

What a fun and lively evening! Maria is a gem, sharing her philosophy on everything from food to family, from shopping to chopping. The evening ran a bit longer than scheduled, but no one seemed to mind, and our dinner was delicious, if I do say so myself!

Athens Night Sightseeing Tour with Greek Dinner Show

Athens, Greece

My Rating
1 star rating: I do not recommend this

My Review

The tour is old and tired. The "night sightseeing" portion consisted of a quick drive through Syntagma Square, not even slowing down, and a quick stop with a view of the Parthenon in the distance. The dinner was awful -- tables squeezed in so tight the waiters were always leaning over us and bumping our chairs, right through the performances so we couldn't see the dancers. Food was mediocre at best. It would be better to just go to a good performance (without dinner) -- or have a nice dinner first and then be able to give full attention and respect to the performers. This is not the real Greece -- don't bother.
