An absolute 'must do' while in Ketchikan! The scenery is spectacular, even though the weather was cloudy and rainy on the day we took this tour in mid-May - living up to the name 'Misty Fjords'. I'm sure this would be a phenomenal experience on a sunny day.
We were collected right at the cruise ship dock and taken less than a 5-minute drive to meet the float plane - a classic de Havilland Beaver.
The flying experience consisted of meandering up and down the fjords, about 20-minutes out of Ketchikan, and a water landing at a dock where we were able to get out of the plane to take in the surroundings in the wilderness for about 10-minutes.
Totally worth it, and would do it again!
We were able to see humpback whales breaching (one dove right underneath our tour boat as well) and sea lions clustered on a buoy. Spectacular scenery. Our guide on the boat, Cinnamon, did a fantastic job narrating the experience and answering questions.
Mendenhall Glacier tour consisted of being dropped off at the Visitor's Center for just over an hour of self-guided wandering.
Downsides of this tour;
- Long ride by bus from downtown Juneau to Auke Bay, to board the tour boat.
- Many other tour boats circling around the whales.
- Mendenhall Glacier portion of the tour basically an extended photo op from the vantage point of the Visitor Center; there wasn't quite enough time to walk the trails to get as close to the glacier as possible.
- Long bus ride back to downtown Juneau.
