Amsterdam Walking Tour

Amsterdam, Netherlands

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

We met up with our guide for a very interesting tour around some of the streets we wouldn't have explored on our own. There was everything from the palace in Dam Square to the red light district, located strangely enough right next to where the port was. Our meanderings took us to Rembrandt’s house when he was at his most successful. We saw plenty of canals and found out that Singel, where our hotel room overlooked, was originally a moat and that all the canals are flushed every day by the use of dozens of locks. She told us stories behind the identification plaques on houses and the hidden churches from when Catholicism was outlawed. We both loved the hidden and very picturesque mews with its lovely houses and gardens, such a surprise in such a busy city. Our guide was excellent and really showed us a city we could never have found on our own.

San Francisco Bay Sunset Cruise

San Francisco, California

My Rating
1 star rating: I do not recommend this

My Review

We didn't go on the cruise as planned. We had the tickets and waited and waited and waited in the line in the freezing cold (we were rugged up but still really cold). Took any enthusiasm away - would have helped if they'd boarded us early - so we left and passed on our tickets to a young couple for them to enjoy instead. The cruise would be great to do at a different time of year when the weather is warmer and San Francisco isn't suffering from its summer fog.

Muir Woods, Giant Redwoods and Sausalito Half-Day Trip

San Francisco, California

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

We enjoyed the tour very much and would have done a whole day trip to enjoy it even more but time was against us. The woods were really magnificent and the redwoods very special. Sausalito was the highlight for us from the views across the harbour to the large number of shops to browse - loved the Native American jewellery, so beautiful. Could have done without Brian doing the Aussie, Aussie, Aussie thing and talking non-stop but they were the only minuses and small ones at that. This was an excellent tour which was topped off with a stop to take photos of the Golden Gate bridge in brilliant sunshine.

Holland in One Day Sightseeing Tour

Amsterdam, Netherlands

My Rating
3 star rating: Worth doing

My Review

I think we are getting beyond these types of day tours. Our coach was the double-decker, crammed full of people and of course took the motorways to get to and from more quickly. We got stuck in the back row of the bottom deck with a fidgety child in front of us and as for our guide he was okay with the facts but had the personality of a dead cod and insisted on having his microphone on full bore. Once I fashioned some earplugs from a tissue I could hear him at a more acceptable level. My husband did ask him to lower it a notch but it never happened, maybe he just enjoys torturing eardrums. However, the places we visited were most enjoyable with enough time spent in each to get a feel of the place. The view from the Euromast in Rotterdam was spectacular. Madurodam was the highlight for us and being able to see more of what the Netherlands has to offer.

Amsterdam Sightseeing Tour and Skip-the-Line Ticket to the Anne Frank House

Amsterdam, Netherlands

My Rating
4 star rating: Recommended

My Review

This was a 2 ½ hour (afternoon) bus trip around the city with the guide pointing out what was what, when and why. We saw many of the places we had seen the previous night with a better view as we were on the top deck of a double-decker bus as opposed to a boat on the canals but not as good as we were going much faster. Our guide was excellent and her explanations were really good to listen to. The diamond factory visit was most interesting but the visit to Anne Frank's house wasn't. Not the fault of the tour just way too many tourists crammed in so we never got the feel of the place at all apart from going through the bookcase opening leading to the Secret Annex.

Skip the Line: Madame Tussauds Amsterdam

Amsterdam, Netherlands

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

We visited reasonably early and having tickets meant we bypassed the queue and went straight in. The enthusiastic young man on rope duty did ask if we’d like our photo taken with Mr Obama but not being American we declined. They only allow a certain number of people in at a time which made for a most enjoyable visit so we had plenty of time to stop and look at all the figures and marvel at their creation. There was a great range of "people" from all areas of life with "celebrities" being the most popular. We really recommend this as being the best way to visit Madame Tussaud's especially for people who don't have a lot of time and/or hate queues.
