Small-Group Évora Day Trip from Lisbon with Wine Tasting

Lisbon, Portugal

My Rating
3 star rating: Worth doing

My Review

We liked our travel company and guide, but were disappointment with Evora. It was not worth the long hours. There are many beautiful places to see near Lisbon. The visit to the cork farm was good. The wine tasting was good, although the location is just a wine shop. Wines were expensive, but good quality. This is more a sales pitch rather than a real wine tour, FYI.

3-Day Kruger Park Wildlife Safari

Johannesburg, South Africa

My Rating
1 star rating: I do not recommend this

My Review

Kruger is a beautiful place to visit and I would recommend it to anyone. However, based on my recent experiences with the tour agency/s I would not recommend this tour to anyone. If you want to go to Kruger, you are better off looking for options like self driving and then taking an open jeep safari, or look for another travel company. We had a horrible driver/guide who practically refused to provide us with the promised closed safari in an attempt to 'hard sell' the open jeep safari. This was a classic case of 'bait and switch'. Once we were at the park the first day, she refused to look for animals on the pretext that she cannot drive and look for game at the same time and that she was afraid to take the vehicle to the gravel roads! After hearing her outburst, I informed her that we just had a closed vehicle trip in Pilanesberg and that our driver/guide for that trip drove slowly and spotted all the animals for us and took his vehicle to the gravel roads as well. To this she responded with a very rude remark. She said and I quote, “ OK, I will find the animals if you do the driving. I cannot do both”. I was very insulted and taken aback, because isn’t the job of an ‘expert game ranger’ to drive and help customers spot animals? If I had to drive and my husband were to spot the animals why did we pay to take the help of a so called expert?
Since she was obviously not going to help us spot any animals, we tried to do that on our own. However, it became very difficult since she was driving very fast. My husband requested her to slow down so that we could better spot the animals. To this she responded again in a very rude tone,” I am following the speed limit and I am allowed to go at 50kmph”.
The point is that in the tour brochure the open safari is given as an option, but if the closed safari driver refuses to provide us with the services as promised, then it is really not an option, is it? We feel thoroughly cheated.

Cape Town City Hop-on Hop-off Tour

My Review

This is a great way to see Cape Town. The buses are very comfortable and they give you a set of earphones that allows you to listen to a running commentary about the different places the bus is going to as you pass them. They go to all the important spots and rotate at 35 minute intervals so you have plenty of time to stop and then pick up the bus again.

Aquila Game Reserve Wildlife Safari from Cape Town

Cape Town, South Africa

My Rating
1 star rating: I do not recommend this

My Review

a-        The brochure did not mention that this game reserve is actually so small that it could almost be called a big zoo, without the partitions among animals. They actually ad a lion reserve, and although it was nice to see them, it was also not the ‘wildlife’ experience we had hoped for.

b-        The greater concern involves the driver. He came on duty while suffering from a full blown flu infection. Throughout the journey he coughed, sneezed, blew his nose and spit, almost non-stop. We were trapped in a closed vehicle with him for several hours and by the end of the day I had contracted the infection and my entire trip to South Africa went south from then on. We went on the trip on May 17 and by the time the trip was over I was having sore throat and sneezing. On May 18, I started having fever and flu symptoms. I suffered all through the trip and ultimately had to seek medical help and use antibiotics.

When I asked the driver why he came to work although he was so sick, he said that he would not get paid if he did not come to work. I found his attitude extremely irresponsible and callous. He was fully aware that he had a severely contagious illness; yet he chose to put the health of all his passengers at risk by exposing them to the flu virus. This is the height of irresponsibility, both on the part of the driver and the company who will not take appropriate measure to prevent such incidents. The driver got his pay, and I am still paying the price for it!

Kutna Hora Day Trip from Prague

Prague, Czech Republic

My Rating
1 star rating: I do not recommend this

My Review

I am forced to give this tour a 1 star since there is no option of giving a -0 start to it! Kutna Hora is a Wonderful place, but the tour was a horrible experince. We had specially requested hotel pick up and drop off and confirmed these two days in advance. When we arrived in Prague we had the hotel people call the agency to confirm the pick up and drop off. All together we had confirmed with the travel agency three times that we would be picked up and dropped off from our hotel. The pick up was 20 minutes late and the guide refused to drop us off at the hotel in the evening! She dropped us at some place in the city square and we had no clue how to get back to our hotel and we begged her to use her phone and talk to her office or the hotel people to verify that we had arranged for a drop off. She was extremely rude and practically told us to get lost. She said and I quote, "I don't care what arrangement you made. I do not work for the hotel and I will not talk to my office. I cannot drop you to the hotel. You can complain all you want. I don't care". She left us stranded in the cold and rain. We did not know the local language and had no clue how to get back. It took us more than an hour to get back to the hotel that normally takes 15 minutes. this trip was a nightmare. I cannot believe that a company like Viator, to which we are so loyal for so many years, could have such a lousy tour.

Karlovy Vary Day Trip from Prague

Prague, Czech Republic

My Rating
1 star rating: I do not recommend this

My Review

Beware. This trip is a rip off! The so called 'bus' was a rickety van and was extremely uncomfortable. The trip was supposed to be an English tour, but our guide gave her speeches in three languages along with English. She never translated the longer parts into English and as a result we were unable to follow many things during the journey. The entire van trip was spent listening to random commentates in foreign languages, when we had signed up for an English tour! Lunch main course was a pitiful sliver of overcooked chicken with a load of potato sides and it was served late (at 2.15pm). The tour description said and I quote: 'Sample the mineral spring water, local wafers and traditional herbal liqueur. However, we were never given any samples of wafers and liqueur. When we asked the guide she kept arguing that it was only a 'possibility' and that no 'inspection' of the liqueur place was possible. We showed her the printed description taken from Viator website, and she laughed at us and finally told us that the liqueur was no good and not worth trying. She did have us spend more than an hour in the glass factory where she tried to show me items to purchase like a sales girl.

Royal Castles of Neuschwanstein and Linderhof Day Tour from Munich

Beautiful places to visit. The bus was super comfortable and the road trip was very enjoyably. My only issue is that we were not told before hand that there would be extensive walking and climbing stairs in both places. I have knee problems and was not able to visit either place from inside due to the walking involved. I feel that we should have been warned about this so that we could have better prepared for it.

Istanbul Shore Excursion: Istanbul in One Day Sightseeing Tour

This was a great trip. The guide was wonderful and very helpful + knowledgeable. The lunch was mediocre. Another issue was that we were not warned that most of the trip would be walking and quite a bit of time spent outdoors. We would have been better prepared for it if this was mentioned before. Other than these issues we had a lovely time. I recommend this trip to everyone!

Heidiland and Liechtenstein Tour from Zurich: Two Countries in One Day

Zurich, Switzerland

My Rating
1 star rating: I do not recommend this

My Review

The guide was obnoxious and we were subjected to a barrage of racist and social segmented comments loosely camouflaged as jokes. There was nothing funny about being told that Americans use suing as a business to make money or that Arabs do not want to go back to their country after visiting Switzerland or that people with convertibles are 'chiki-mikis' who are people with no class but have come into money recently. Being an American I did not appreciate his rude comments about Americans and did not find it funny. The guide was openly rude about different segments of people in his comments throughout, making the entire trip a big headache.
Do yourself a favor and find another tour company with more professional guides who are not suffering from superiority complex and not looking down at people from other parts of the globe. Switzerland is beautiful, but being subjected to horrible comments for 8 hours may make a dent in your enjoyment.
