Oahu Submarine Scooter Adventure

Oahu, Hawaii

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

Awesome! Highly recommended. If the weather is cold, though, be prepared to stand in the elements for a couple hours. You only get 20 minutes of "diving" and the rest of the time is spent either onboard chatting or snorkeling around the boat. The currents are strong in the area and make snorkeling a bit more of a workout than typical. Overall, a fantastic time!

Las Vegas Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride

Las Vegas, Nevada

My Rating
2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better

My Review

Fairly painless process; we arrived the night before the flight so called in a week in advance. Picked up at the front door of our strip hotel at 515am. Driven to the pre-flight meeting point, happened to be a Starbucks for everyone who needed their caffeine fix that early in the day. One of the pilots gave the safety briefing before we drove over to the actual lift-off location and watched the balloons being filled. The coolest part of the entire excursion was being able to walk inside the almost full balloon while it was still lying on its side on the ground. Got a few cool pictures inside it before they turned on the burners and tipped them upright. The flight itself was boring; we floated across the residential side of Vegas, nowhere near the Strip. Over schools and pools and golf courses we went for almost an hour, before landing in a bare patch of gravel nice and smoothly. It was an enjoyable experience, if you have never done a balloon flight before, but when you're flying low over Las Vegas you would expect to go over the famous, iconic structures, not residential houses that are identical in every city. Overall, not worth the money at full price, discounted, sure, if you really want to get up that early in Vegas.

this is either a DO NOT DO or a MUST DO depending on the person. The water is 2 degrees Celsius year round, which is damned cold. The teddy bear suits and dry suits are a pain in the ass to get on and off. There is nothing to see in the water except neon green seaweed and slimy brown algae. But if you are the adventurous type then you will do it all anyway.

Brussels Chocolate Walking Tour and Workshop

Brussels, Belgium

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

This tour was fantastically done by Marc, the owner. He was knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his chocolate and passed on his knowledge to us. We sampled chocolates from a variety of chocloatiers from large, commercial Neuhaus to the small local Elisabeth, all offering their take on how chocolate should be served, displayed and eaten. Truly a great time wandering the city learning the history and eating fabulous chocolate. I would recommend this tour to anyone in Brussels.

Brussels Beer Tasting Tour

Brussels, Belgium

My Rating
2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better

My Review

Not the best beer tour I have ever been on. The guides (we had 2 because the group was so large) did not speak English very well. We got to taste a variety of high-end beers, but all of them tasted the same, very strong. We did not get a broad spectrum tasting of all the beers made in Belgium, more of a sampling of the "supposedly" very good ones, which imo were not at all. Some people may have enjoyed the selection, but none of the group I was in enjoyed them. The best beer we tried was the Bellevue Krieg cherry beer and it wasn't even on the tasting list, we had to buy it ourselves. Plus the #1 beer in the world is made in Belgium and it wasn't even mentioned on the tour, we found out where to get it from our chocolate tour guide.

Ghent and Bruges Day Trip from Brussels

Brussels, Belgium

My Rating
2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better

My Review

This could have been a good tour, and with a few adjustments could have been great. The bus is the first negative, not made for full-sized adults; they jammed so many seats in to maximize profit that anyone over 5 and a half feet has their knees against the seat in front. The number of different languages on the tour detracted immensely, having to tell each description in 4 languages meant that we drove passed 5 more points of interest but there wasn't time to tell us what they were. Ghent was a nice little place with some scenic areas for great photos, but Bruges was a total waste of time, Bruges is a little medieval town that has been taken over by terrible restaurants and souvenir shops trying to steal every last penny from the tourists. The only highlight of the Bruges portion was the canal tour which was not included and cost 7.50 euro. The boats took you along all the major avenues and the guide gave the tour in only 2 languages so we got far more in-depth information. Both tours seemed to be aimed at removing as much extra money from our wallets as possible; we were taken to many places that were not only historical and picturesque, but would sell us crap at outrageous prices too. Really, the tour should have been free for all the kickbacks the company got for delivering 55 tourists to the shops' doorsteps.

Small-Group Amsterdam Beer Tour

Amsterdam, Netherlands

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

Audrey was fantastic, even after one of the guys spilled the very first beer on her, she was great. We had only 3 people on the tour and that made it awesome, so much better than a larger group, we got to know eachother and had a great time. We tried a variety of beers at different pubs and learned a lot about the local history. The best stop was for liqueurs at Wyndand Focking, a local store since the mid 1600s, hopefully it will still be there in the future since there was discussion about the owners selling to a corporation. All the pubs were at out-of-the-way places which you would never just stumble across on your vacation, you would have to know they were there to look for them. Overall a great way to spend a few hours in Amsterdam.

Olaf, the guide was awesome, and cute, and could drink like a fish. She told us all about the prohibition and the history behind the hard liquor and beers of Iceland. Definitely worth doing, especially when you get to drink as much Gull as you can during the presentations. Cheers!

4 hours and didn't catch anything even though other people on the boat caught 10+ big fish. Good thing the BBQ is for everyone and not just those who caught! Was a fun time, but chilly, dress warmly. Do it!
