Danube Bend Day Trip from Budapest

Budapest, Hungary

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

Really enjoyed the day and was delighted to see some of the Hungarian countryside. Our guide Lazlo was good about providing info as we journeyed, and ensuring that we all saw as much as possible. It was also great to meet people from so many other countries on the tour (Russians, Brits, Canadians, French, Spaniards).

Budapest City Walking Tour

My Review

The tour was good, but even in 3 hours it was too rushed to see much of the city. Mostly we just saw buildings from the outside without ever having the chance to see the inside. Although it was great to enjoy strudel en route, perhaps that 1/2 hour could be used to show other sites or to explore inside a building (eg. St. Stephen's) or pass in front of the Parliament Buildings. Budapest is spread out and doesn't lend itself easily to a walking tour - thank goodness for the metro. Barbara HB was a good guide and most helpful in arranging some other details for me.

Prague Castle Walking Tour

Prague, Czech Republic

My Rating
3 star rating: Worth doing

My Review

The tour was OK but the site was very crowded. Since the tour was timed to see part of the changing of the guard, that meant it was even more crowded than it might be at another time of day. Also the Royal Palace was closed (as it is 2 weeks every 5 years for showing of the royal jewels) - but no rebate was available - and no mention of that closure appeared on any of the promo material. All participants were disappointed. Too we were rushed through St. George's Basilica (the guide said the line there was unusually long), and basically just walked in and walked out without waiting for the line to move through the whole building. Nor did we get to see inside the Golden Lane stores - again simply rushed through. My friends who did the Free Walking Tour in Prague the same day saw more of the castle area than those of us who took this paid tour. I don't know the guide's name, but he had a tendency to look at the object or building (rather than his customers) when explaining something - and thus often couldn't be heard.

Jewish Prague Walking Tour

Prague, Czech Republic

My Rating
1 star rating: I do not recommend this

My Review

I was very disappointed in this tour. Our guide (Elena) had quite weak English - she was also giving the tour in Spanish and she appeared more at ease there. The four of us who spoke English figured that together we might be able to piece together a sentence and deduce what was being said. Mostly the guide just pointed a few things out and gave no details. That was particularly obvious when we encountered other tour groups with animated guides giving lots of details. When we got to the Pinkas Synagogue, she made no mention of the upstairs exhibit of children's art from the concentration camps - and so we all missed that important part. Again my friends on the Free Walking Tour saw as much as we saw on this paid tour - and I could have done the Jewish quarter myself and seen the same things with the little info provided.

Given my experience of this tour and my luke-warm response to the Castle Tour, suggest Viatour consider another local operator for its Prague tours.
