Ketchikan Shore Excursion: 90-Minute Fjords National Monument Seaplane Tour

Ketchikan, Alaska

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

A truly amazing experience! I was somewhat apprehensive about flying in such a small aircraft. I had no reason to be. It was the smoothest flight of my life. The scenery was absolutely fantastic - you have to see it to believe it.
Mark, our pilot, was very informative and also very attentive. He did his utmost to make the flight as memorable as possible (even to the point of flying over all the good bear spotting points, despite this not being a wildlife flight).
Everyone associated with this tour were first class. A true hightlight of our cruise.

Skagway Shore Excursion: Bennett Train Journey on the White Pass Rail

Skagway, Alaska

My Rating
4 star rating: Recommended

My Review

A fantastic climb on the train through amazing scenery. In hindsight we found the train journey a little too long. The trip to the White Pass Summit would have probably been enough. The bus journey back was very informative if a little "wordy". It followed a different route allowing for different scenery to be view as well as a cross-gorge view of the railway.
All in all a very long but enoyable day (we met at 0720 and had a very tasty lunch at 1020!!)

Juneau Shore Excursion: Whale-Watching Adventure

Juneau, Alaska

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

I was a little sceptical as to whether we would see any whales and if so how close we would get. Well "Captain Larry" and Kelly, our very enthusiastic guide, soon put paid to that.
They seemed to be totally in tune with these majestic creatures. Whilst they had to keep the boat the required distance from the whales, the whales obliged by approaching the boat - on one occasion as close as 25 metres. They seemed to be playing with the boat, more like porpoises than whales.
We saw about 12 whales (simultaneously) who obliged with blows that created mini rainbows with the sun behind us. They would follow that with a high "hump" curving into a magnicient tail display.
The crew's narration was first class and also very entertaining. They are clearly extremely knowledgeable about all marinelife with a particular affinity for the whales.
Captain Larry's parting comment is one that will stay with me for a long time to come. "Today nature has been kind to you. When you get home, you be kind to nature".
Don't miss this one!
