Romantic Road, Rothenburg and Harburg Day Tour from Munich

Munich, Germany

My Rating
4 star rating: Recommended

My Review

We enjoyed this tour very much, a highlight was the visit to Harburg Castle on the way to Rothenburg. This castle is centuries old and some of it is in its original form. It is a long day on the bus, but the countryside, especially on the forward journey is very beautiful. In Rothenburg, you are left on your own, so you can choose to visit the historical aspects of the town or just wander around the many shops, We had plenty of time to do a combination of both. Munich City Hop-on Hop-off Tour

Munich, Germany

My Rating
3 star rating: Worth doing

My Review

We took the one day express tour. Their is a guide on the bus, providing information in German and then English. On one of the buses the guide was very hard to understand when speaking English, on the second bus it was much better. For other languages earphones are available. In regard to the express tour, the main attractions you may want to visit are in one area, therefore we formed the view that it would just have been easier and cheaper to catch a train to a central point and go from there. We would suggest you do some research first. Alan and Maureen, Australia

Berchtesgaden and Eagle's Nest Day Tour from Munich

Munich, Germany

My Rating
4 star rating: Recommended

My Review

Although we did this tour in June it was during a period when there was a real cold snap across Europe. We even had five minutes of snow while at Eagle's Nest. This is a long day on the bus with no side trips. On arrival you get to spend some time in the Documentation Centre, but it is all in German, you will need audio phones if you want to get any great benefit from your visit, but we don't think that the time you get there would make this worthwhile. Walking through the bunker section was interesting. Eagle's Nest is now a restaurant so except for waking around the exterior or having a snack and cuppa in the restaurant there was little to do, as it was cold and wet. On a sunny day you could take a walk on one of the many tracks and even walk down to the bottom in lieu of taking the elevator. Still it was interesting to stand on the patio that is featured in documentaries on Hitler. Maureen and Alan, Australia

Potsdam Half-Day Trip from Berlin

Berlin, Germany

My Rating
2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better

My Review

In my opinion this is a waste of money. An air conditioned bus is advertised yet I travelled on one of the hop on hop off buses used in Berlin for sightseeing. It was a very hot day and even for those of us who sat downstairs to get out of the sun, the air conditioning was insufficient. When we arrived in Potsdam the bus drove us around the town and the audio provided talked about various buildings of interest. But you passed by them so quickly. If you are like me information provided like this does not stay in the memory for too long. The only places you can leave the bus is at either of two castles (not both). At the first and larger one you can do a tour but the second smaller one, they advise you that there is insufficient time an to take the opportunity to just wander around the gardens. Unfortunately you are not informed of this until you leave the first castle. You do not get a choice of being able to wander around the township itself which I would have liked to do. In the end I caught a local bus and made my own way home by train. Personally I would catch the train to Potsdam and catch a local bus to whatever sights you want to see, possibly take an overnight bag and stay the night. It is certainly a beautiful town. The bus driver had very limited English. Maureen from Australia

Berlin City Hop-on Hop-off Tour

Berlin, Germany

My Rating
3 star rating: Worth doing

My Review

We did the two day hop on hop off tour. It is an audio tour, no actual guide on the bus. We found the music between the actual commentary annoying, if you wear hearing aids you would need to remove them to use the headphones. We appeared to go by advertised stops without stopping which was annoying. Also the commentary does not give you directions to where the actual places of interest are located once you get off at a specified point. One example of this is a remaining bit of the Berlin Wall. We had to go back the next day to visit it as we only found out where it was once we were back on the bus going to the next stop. If you plan to stay on the bus it takes over two hours to do the full trip, so if you want to use it for a return journey to your start point, you may have to cover a lengthy route that you have already covered. The train system in Berlin in excellent, get a day ticket, work out what you want to see and plan a route. Alan and Maureen. Australia

Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial Walking Tour

Berlin, Germany

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

Our guide was excellent, as he was English, there was no language barriers. We met at the assigned meeting place and then caught a train to Sachsenhausen. It is about a 20 minute fast paced walked from the railway station to Sachsenhausen. There appeared to be a bus that went past there but this was not referred to. If you are interested in this part of history it is well worth doing this tour. You do need to take your own lunch with you, it was suggested that we purchase a roll or fruit to take with us before catching the train at Berlin's central station. You also need to eat lunch on the run, there is no set time to stop as a group to eat lunch. Even if you have visited a concentration camp before, it is still worth the visit to this one. After returning to the railway station, you are directed on how to get back to your own accommodation rather than return to the original meeting place. Alan and Maureen, Australia
