In short this tour was NOT worth the money OR the time. We spent more time in gift shops than on the volcano and the ONLY view of volcanic activity we got was some steam vents and some hazy far off smoke. The tour guide admitted that she was supposed to be guiding a different tour and wasn't prepared.
The tour guide was friendly enough but kept getting stuck on the topic of the two houses she owns on the island and real estate in general which was strange.
If you are already on the big island and don't have to pay air fare AND all you really want out of this is some photo ops with a volcanic background and/or a tour of lots of souvenir shops then this is a good tour for you. Otherwise save your money, rent a car and do it on your own OR really splurge and go on a helicopter tour. Several people in our tour group were so disgusted that they left to find a helicopter tour, abandoning the money they had already spent on this one.
I enjoyed shopping and the little bit of the volcano we did see but there were LOTS of other things/tours/activities I would have rather spent that money on. Not to mention the whole day of my vacation I could have spent doing something I would have liked better.
There wasn't a single person on the tour who would do it again or recommend it to a friend.
