San Francisco, California
My daughter's and I had a great day, it was rather cold though (even in Summer), especially when we walked down into the "play" area - the wind was blowing a gale (can only imagine how cold it must have been during Winter). The visit was quite surreal but eerie!!! I was surprised that my daughter's (18 yrs and 12 yrs) actually enjoyed learning about the history of Alcatraz. Put on your head phones and walk around inside listening to the narrated story - easy to follow and very informative. We were lucky the day we visited, Mr Pat Mahoney (a prison guard from 1956 - 1963) was at Alcatraz signing his book - what a treat (what a shame though, I never thought of getting a photo with him). Had no problems with finding the pier; the male staff member at the ticket booth was very friendly, greeted us with a lovely smile and he was very helpful. Make sure you book in advance - don't just expect to show up and buy tickets as you'll miss out. Would definitely visit again.
