If you are still going back and forth on whether or not to pay the extra money on a tour.. BUY IT! I was hesitant and wanted to try and be cheap but went ahead and bought the tour, best decision ever. Technically, this is not a tour. You meet the group under the tower and your guide will speak to you for about 10 minutes about the history of the tower. She then took us to the group entrance line where I was the first one in line and walked straight up to the elevator. There was literally no wait but the wait for the non-group line was at least 3 hours long. Can you imagine spending half of you day in Paris just waiting in line to go to the top? Your guide does not come up with you, the top is way too crowded for groups to try and walk around together.
Do not even attempt to go to the Vatican without a tour. Our tour began at 9 in the morning and the line was already wrapped around the city walls. Our group walked up the other side of the street right in to the entrance of the Vatican Museum and began our tour. There was no waiting for tickets and then waiting to get in. Our tour guide was awesome. She knew so much about the Vatican that we would have never learned walking through on our own.
