Naples Shore Excursion: Pompeii and Sorrento Day Trip

Naples, Italy

My Rating
3 star rating: Worth doing

My Review

We were scheduled to be picked up at 10.00am at the pier only to linger for the stragglers and then stopped to pick up other people within the city. This is a 7 hour tour and the ship was scheduled to leave at 6.00pm and we were to be back at the ship at 5.30pm. Many delays occurred getting started. The Pompeii Tour was very interesting but difficult for seniors and anyone with waling challenges. None of this was taken in to consideration by the tour guide as she had her script and wouldn't deviate except to yell at people to keep up (I also overheard her making unkind remarks under her breath). By the time we got to the end, there was no time to shop for souvenirs. Lunch was mediocre. There was not much time to go to Sorrento in the 2-1/2 hours left in the day. We were swept through the town, 15 minutes of shopping which were spent at a Lemonchello store where the proprieters were friends of the tour guide. We worried the entire time that we wouldn't make it back to the ship in time which we did but just by the hair on the skin of our chiny chin chin. Pompeii is not a place you can rush through...there was a museum that we didn't see at all. Sorrento is a place i would like to go back and see at a slower pace. These two tours are both very interesting but shouldn't be made back to back. Or at least begin earlier in the day.

Kusadasi Shore Excursion: Private Tour to Ephesus including House of Virgin Mary and Temple of Artemis

Kusadasi, Turkey

My Review

Couldn't have been better. Alex was a super tour guide and treated us with kindness and courtesy.
Turkey was a very pleasant surprise. Beautiful scenery and very clean. We stopped to eat at a local place where Alex and his wife enjoy the food...delicious. He asked if wanted to go to the Bulbul Mountain Looms, a local school for making carpets including a silk farm. Quite interesting and I was lucky enough to purchase a beautiful carpet. Carpet making is one of Turkey's top industries. Alex asked if we were interested in seeing these made and later asked if we were interested in prices. I would like to clarify that this was not pushed on us at all (at least they made it seem that way). Ephesus has marble pathways, is quite interesting, but not easy for people with walking challenges. Alex was very considerate in keeping our slow pace. It is sad to see the many feral cats and homeless dogs everywhere.

Santorini Shore Excursion: Private Scenic Tour of Santorini, including Oia and Mt Profitis Ilias Monastery

Santorini, Greece

My Review

Simone is an excellent guide: courteous, informative, and sensitive to our needs. He met us on the pier at 8.30am (we were scheduled at 9.00am). Santorini is a "tendered" port so we took a boat early enough to make it by 9.00am. We rode the aerial tram up to Fiar and walked through the town (shops) to the van waiting for us at the bottom of the hill ( I was thinking that the hill was a breeze going down but the trip back would be hard and that is correct). We drove first to the highest point of Santorini and visited the chapel there looking over spectacular scenery....you can see the entire island which is actually one edge of the caldera. Then on to Oia (eea). This is where most of the pictures that are seen worldwide are taken of the white buildings and churches with the blue domes sitting on a side of a cliff with the blue, blue, Aegean Sea in the background. Fantastic scenery. Again, not easy for the walking challenged but well worth going through the efforts. The gelato there is mahvelous. Back to Fiar for lunch and shopping. Ate at the Volcano Blue restaurant and finally had a taste of authentic Spanakopita which interestingly, they called Spinach Pie. Portions were huge and tasty. More shopping and back to the ship by aerial tram where the tender is waiting to take you back to the ship.
