City of David and Underground Jerusalem Day Tour

Jerusalem, Israel

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

The tour was great. I was picked up within ten minutes of the scheduled time, and a lady entered my hotel lobby announcing my name clearly so that I knew it was my tour. We drove to a location to switch busses and another location at a hotel to get the proper guide (jews only are allowed in the jewish quarter of the City of David, I presume, and similar for other places) and use a restroom before the tour.

It was incredibly hot out, but the pace of the tour was just right. We tried to stick to the shade and we made what I felt at the time was slow progress through the City of David -- I realized later that I'm too excited to walk fast and that by midday the heat had gotten to me and I appreciated the pace. My group was small, 6 people, and the tour guide's explanation were very thorough and interesting. He answered all of our questions and engaged with the history buffs in respectful debate about events that had occurred. The length of time for lunch was a bit short but I should have spoken up and my request would have been accommodated. At all stops there was enough time for everyone to get their fill of the place.

At the end of the scheduled tour the guide offered to take us a bit farther through the tunnels, and we agreed. This gave a bit of an extra portion to our day and really rounded out the experience because the tunnels took us back closer to the archaeological sites that we had seen from afar earlier in the day.

Highlights of the tour were: site of the last supper (it's just an empty room... but still...), jewish quarter of City of David (places of worship, food, restaurants, shops, courtyard), walk past and through underground tunnels (where people hid while city was being sacked) and see old parts of the wall of the city, walk past active archaeological sites. It was a holiday when I went so we were not allowed inside some places -- maybe that's why we had time for more tunnels. :)
