There were multiple trips rolled into one. The one guide was having to manage all of this, which involved standing around for long periods, changing buses, not being able to leave anything on the bus. This considerably reduced the amount of time available to see Pompeii.
Some of us continued on to Vesuvius and we only had time to walk up to the crater and back, with no time at the crater. There was also no guide and no commentary provided for the second leg of the journey. The guide promptly dropped us off as soon as possible and we felt she was not very engaging throughout the trip.
The tour felt a bit rushed and there was not enough time. The tour guide was engaging. However, the tour group felt way too overcrowded and thus not very engaging.
It was a nice escape from Shanghai City and small group tour definitely made it personal and a nice experience.
