We had a really great time on this tour - we loved Pedro who spent every minute of 11 hours doing everything possible to make our trip fun and special - from picking us up at our apartment to driving superbly on narrow, winding roads, stopping for "port" stops, waiting on us at lunch....boat ride, visits to port cellars, lunch, wine, port again....all fantastic and included in the modest price. And the Douru valley itself was spectacular. Really a great tour and well worth it, to say the least!
This is a nice easy day trip from Vienna. Bratislava is worth the visit and is very easy to walk around in a couple of hours. Our tour guide was very good and knew a lot about the city. It was definitely worth the extra money to take the boat back to Vienna as it is much more scenic than the bus. Our major problem was with knowing where to catch the bus in the morning to Bratislava. The directions are not at all clear and we would never have figured it out without the help of our Viennese friends with whom we were staying. Perhaps it is more clear if you are staying in a hotel.
You catch the bus at the bus station in Vienna, but it is not clear which bus to take. We asked several drivers and none of them seemed to know, even the driver who ended up being the driver of our bus! The city guide does not join you until you reach Bratislava, so you are kind of on your own in Vienna. It is much clearer on the return as the guide tells you exactly which boat to catch and it takes you to the docks in Vienna where you can catch public transportation back to where you are staying.
