I have been living in Europe for over a year and generally enjoy a good tour and have been on a number of them. This Douro Valley Small-Group Tour was undoubtedly the most enjoyable. The tour consisted of my husband, three daughters (in their early twenties) and myself. We were picked up at our hotel by our two guides, José Pedro David (Ze) and Pepe Anibal Rocha Rodrigues (Pedro). It actually did feel as if two close friends had joined us to share a day in the Douro Valley … The tour was informative but also conversational and full of laughter. Ze and Pedro were improvisational guides who showed us a wide range of life in a more traditional Portugal from the production of olive oil (as introduced by the Romans) to a delicious lunch in a village square, to an award winning winery that is still family-run and has been so for over three generations. We toured the vineyard lined with olive and orange trees to enhance the flavor of the grape. It has been said that Portugal never abandoned organic farming … and the sights and tastes of this tour underscored that. We finished a wonderful day having (more) wine as well as appetizers in a home that was built early in the 19th century century adjacent to the vinyard as well as the family chapel. An incredible day that I wish to highly recommend to fellow travelers who are thinking of visiting this enchanting region of Portugal!
