Hitler and the Third Reich Munich Walking Tour

Munich, Germany

My Rating
4 star rating: Recommended

My Review

Very informative tour about the political climate that led to the formation of the Third Reich in Munich, Hitler's rise to power, the fear and victimization the accompanied the time. It would have been nice to have had a map detailing the location of the markers to go back later as it went very fast. It was interesting how subtle the markers were placed--they definitely did not erase this storied past, but was not glorified either.

Private Tour: Royal Castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau from Munich

Munich, Germany

My Review

The insides of the castles were rated "very cool" by my teenage sons. They were disappointed that we didn't get a solo tour as we had presented it to them. Arranged for a private tour, but the actual part through the castles was a group tour--was not clear in the description. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and acquired our tickets by "skipping the lines" along with a "private ride" to the castle locations (did not go in with us, he went for a swim in the lake while we went on the group tour) and drove us by various lake views of the Alpine Region. He spoke very good English and helped us to understand the Bavarian culture and took us to a traditional, non-commercial lunch spot. It was a bit pricey for what turned out to be a group tour.

Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Small Group Tour from Munich

Munich, Germany

My Review

This is a sad tour, but we managed to have it follow an upbeat Sound of Music tour to offset it on our vacation. Levi was very informative. Try not to drink too much water as bathroom brakes do not always fit with tour breaks. Also wear comfortable walking shoes. My wife had heels on as our hotel wasn't ready when we arrived and struggled with the gravel sections of the tour. Was interesting that this was the first camp, the politics that allowed its formation and that it did not originate as a strictly Jewish prison. Make sure to take a picture of the gate which ironically states in German that "working will set you free."

Great Alpine views from this spot! We went on a perfect sunny day without clouds and saw the beautiful Bavarian countryside. The history was also quite interesting to hear. Tour guide was excellent.

We weren't sure our teenage sons would enjoy this but scheduled it anyway (after watching the movie at home prior to the trip). However, they said they would actually do this one again. The tour guide presented it in a very campy way that took the serious tone out of some of our other historical tour spots. It was a fun easy ride and not too much walking. Older folks could do this one easily.

Ancient Rome Half-Day Walking Tour

Rome, Italy

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

We were lucky to get a very mild day to take this tour. It was very crowded and the excellent tour guide, Linda, stated it can be very hot with lots of steps to climb, etc. My boys would have liked a private, non crowded tour especially of the bottom section of the Colloseum. Learned that the Romans are not too happy with the church for "stealing all of the marble" from their monuments. This one is a must-see, but bring your walking shoes and wear light clothing.

We picked the 10:00 meeting time to accommodate our previous day's travel and our teenage sons. For a private tour, I would pick the earlier time as it was very crowded in the Sistine Chapel by the time we arrived. Stephanie was a great guide and gave us time to pray, touch St Peters statue, see the underground tombs and enjoy St Peters square.
