Experience classic river transportation
on an authentic paddle wheeler built for the Murray River, Australia's most important inland waterway and the world's third longest navigable river.
Well-equipped cabins, excellent meals and attentive staff ensure that you’re comfortable throughout your journey. (See Pricing for accommodation details.) The cruise focuses on nature and wildlife with informative special presentations, shoreline tours and nature hikes. Special dinners and live entertainment allow time to mingle and meet the captain and crew, who share stories about life on the Murray River.
Day 1: Adelaide – Mundarra (D)
Board a deluxe coach in downtown Adelaide for transfer to Mannum, a little over an hour’s drive away. Mannum is the original home of the Murray River paddle wheeler, a vessel that transported goods to the river's rural settlements long before cars and trains. As you drive, take in the sight of the semi-arid valley that yields an assortment of crops.
After you board the paddle wheeler and get settled in your cabin, float downriver as you sip pre-dinner drinks. Then enjoy a special welcome dinner as the evening arrives. Afterward, listen to live musical entertainment indoors, or watch as the boat’s floodlights illuminate the riverbank. You may glimpse nocturnal wildlife such as grey kangaroos, hair-nosed wombats, Murray long-necked tortoises, spoon-beaked egrets and more as your paddle wheeler glides to Mundarra for mooring overnight.
Day 2: Mundarra – Craignook (B, L, D)
After a hearty breakfast, head down the river to disembark at Murray Bridge. Here, join a guided tour of historic landmarks and local attractions. Founded after its first bridge was built in 1879, the city quickly became a bustling township and is now the heart of a major agricultural district. In the afternoon, enjoy a 3-course meal as your boat takes you upriver to moor at Craignook. Unwind before a tasty dinner and entertainment provided by a talented crew.
Day 3: Craignook – River View (B, L, D)
Step ashore this morning for a guided nature walk to see local flora and fauna with a knowledgeable guide. When you return, cruise to the upper river for majestic gorges and awe-inspiring cliffs that stretch some 300 feet (90m) to the sky. As you travel, you can attend a special mid-morning presentation on the food and wine produced in these fertile river lands. Later, taste the bounty itself during a 3-course lunch prepared with regional ingredients.
In the afternoon, stop at a riverside lodge where a boat awaits to take you in small, personalized groups on a safari tour of the shallow backwater. You can also walk along the banks to spot darters, herons and egrets, among other birdlife; play bocce; or take part in a fishing challenge. In the evening, join the captain and officers for happy hour drinks followed by dinner and dancing.
