Alkmaar Cheese Market and Dutch Windmills Half-Day Trip from Amsterdam

Alkmaar Cheese Market and Dutch Windmills Half-Day Trip from Amsterdam

Departing central Amsterdam by coach, the first stop on your half-day tour to the Dutch countryside is the historical village of Alkmaar, known for its traditional cheese market. Your guide accompanies you to the Waagplein, the cobblestone square where the market is seasonally held, and sheds light on cheese production in the Netherlands, which developed its worldwide reputation during the Golden Age.

See the cheese factory and watch cheesemongers in traditional garb selling enormous rounds of Gouda and other Dutch cheeses at the outdoor auction. Witness bidders purchasing cheese the traditional way: by clapping their hands. With a stern clap, the deal is sealed and cheese carriers in white uniforms and colorful hats transport the wheels of cheese to a 14th-century Weigh House (Waag) to tally the bill.

After your visit, embark on a brief guided walking tour of Alkmaar. Then hop back aboard your coach for the drive to the nearby windmill village of Schermerhorn. Spend time photographing impressive wooden windmills lining the riverbank — a quintessential Dutch scene — and even step inside one before the return journey to Amsterdam.

Interesting how a cheese market was organised in Holland in the last centuries ! We also tasted the different types of cheese and indeed - very tasty ! The trip to the windmills was so full of important information about how the Dutch people fought and are still fighting for every square inch of land. We had no idea before that the windmills were used mainly for making polder , for running lakes dry, in our land mills are used for grinding corn.

You could probably get to Alkmaar via public transportation, but it was so relaxing to just get on a bus and let someone else worry about how to get there. The time allotted was just enough to check out the town. Don't miss the church. It was amazing. Loved the whole experience. The windmill stop was nice too. I would have preferred to spend a little less time there and a little more in Alkmaar, but others might feel opposite. The price of the trip was fine. The tour guide was just right. She gave us plenty of information without being annoying. I recommend this tour.

Excellent trip and well worth the time and money. The Cheese Market is awesome and is much more than cheese. You can see wooden shoes being made, try eating some herring, and enjoy the mini pancakes. The trip to the windmills was also wonderful. we just enjoyed the trip through the countryside. The tour guide was excellent.

Very interesting trip. The event was unusual and memorable.
Alkmaar is well worth the visit.
The length of the time in Alkmaar could have been a little longer because there were so many shops that we didn't have time to check out. Just a bit rushed.

This was a great half day trip from Amsterdam. The cheese market was very interesting to see, only problem with the day we went was that it was a very cold, windy and wet day, so a bit miserable walking around the town. However, we were able to see how the cheese is sold, weighed etc.
