Amsterdam Food Tour

Try fresh herring on your Amsterdam food tour!

The Netherlands, as a country situated between nations with more characteristic culinary traditions, has taken influences from its European neighbors in developing its cuisine. Discover Amsterdam’s gastronomic heritage on this 2.5-hour food walking tour led by an informative guide.

Stroll along the city streets, passing alongside picturesque canals and over pretty bridges, and hear about the history and evolution of Dutch cuisine, including the thriving Dutch spice trade during the 16th century when the Netherlands played a major role in the East Indies Spice trade.

Inside a café, see if you love hot, salty French fries — a specialty from its Belgian neighbor — as much as the Dutch do. Sample another Dutch favorite, fresh herring, a popular fish among the Scandinavian nations.

Stop at one of Amsterdam’s top cheese shops and sample some of its pungent artisan cheeses.

Continue to a 17th-century distillery, and savor a house spirit or other traditional beverage. Hear about the history of the Dutch brewing industry, shaped over time partly by German and American influences.

Your tour ends at the distillery, and before leaving, your guide will happily share recommendations on other eateries for you to explore on your own.

Sean was an excellent tour guide. We felt like we spent an afternoon with a friend who shared lots of information about eating in Amsterdam as well as more general information. Great tips on where to eat and shared nice food ending in a drink at a distillery. Good value too

We loved this food tour. Although quite a bit of the foods we tried were free samples anyway, the tour guide was super knowledgeable. We went on our first full day of Amsterdam and learned a lot about the history, the areas we walked through, and of course the different foods!

Sean from Wisconsin was a WONDERFUL Foodie Tour Guide. The conversation and the walk through Amsterdam was informative and enjoyable. The cheese is wonderful, the fries were wonderful the, smoked eel my husband loved, I loved the waffles, alcohol, and sausage. Sean even recommended places to eat out for dinner while in Amsterdam. We went to the Rosenboom in a cute little alley way. Hands down a great meal for a great price.

Excellent guide and very knowledgeable. Were a small group so we had hid undivided attention and ended up getting a lot more from the experience than if in a larger group. He really went the extra mile for us. Thought I would not like the eel, but it was a great new taste.

I wish we had booked this tour earlier in our Amsterdam itinerary. Sean did a great job not just introducing us to local delicacies but also pointing out other attractions in the city. It was a fun couple of hours trying french fries, sausage, brined herring/eel which is actually quite good, and then rewarding ourselves with a stropwafel and ice cream and a drink at a local bar. It was fun, fast moving and very informative.

Easy to find starting location. Our guide was great and full of energy and lots of descriptions of the areas we were walking through as well as the background and history of the cultural reasons for the foods we were eating. We sampled foods from french fried potatoes, schnapps, cheese, herring, to hot dogs. No better way to learn the culture of a people than through their eating habits.
