What You Can Expect
Start your 2-day tour with a pickup from your central Athens hotel or alternatively, make your way to Amalia Hotel near Syntagma Square to meet your guide. Hop on board your air-conditioned coach and then relax on the journey northwest to Delphi.
Stop in the historical spa town of Livadia to stretch your legs, and then continue through the larger town of Arachova to Delphi. Dominating the top of a cliff on the site of Mt Parnassus, the village is home to one of the country’s most famous archeological sites: Ancient Delphi. Head inside the UNESCO World Heritage site for your 1.5-hour walking tour, and learn all about the Ancient Greek civilization in Delphi from your guide. Built on the spot where eagles of the Greek god Zeus collided when released from opposite ends of the Earth, Ancient Delphi is strewn with monuments from the era such as the Sanctuary of Apollo, a highlight of the site.
Enjoy a break for lunch in town (own expense), and then relax on your afternoon journey through central Greece. Gaze out of your window as you cross the Thessalian plains, passing the pretty towns of Amphissa, Lamia and Trikala, and then arrive at your Kalambaka hotel in the early evening. After checking in you can explore town on your own, and finally relax over dinner in your hotel.
Overnight: 4-star Amalia Kalambaka Hotel or 3-star Orfeas Hotel in Kalambaka
Day 2: Kalambaka – Meteora – Thermopylae – Athens (B)
Savor breakfast in your hotel, and then travel to Meteora, your first destination of the day! The UNESCO World Heritage site is home to more than 20 rock monasteries, either perched precariously on top of Meteora’s towering sandstone cliffs or built into the cliffs themselves inside naturally formed caves.
With your guide, visit two of the incredible monasteries and hear fun facts and trivia about the monks who once called them homes. Originally lived in by 11th-century hermits, the monasteries later became safe havens for monks fleeing bloodshed when the Roman Empire began to fall. The two monasteries you may visit are subject to change but typically include Grand Meteora Monastery, Moni Varlaam or Moni Agiou Stefanou.
After your tour of Meteora, return to your coach for your journey back to Athens. The full route lasts around four hours, so enjoy a stop halfway in the coastal town of Thermopylae, near Lamia. Use the break for lunch (own expense), and to stretch your legs while learning about Thermoplylae’s historical battle between the Greek Spartans and Persians.
Travel onward to the Greek capital, and finish your 2-day tour with a drop-off at the start point (your hotel or central Athens) in the early evening.
Absolutely spectacular! The monestraries at Meteora were one of the most beautiful places I've seen. Tour guide was terrific. Gave lots of information. Hotel was very nice with a wonderful buffet dinner and breakfast. Overall, well worth the money.
Not to miss. My favorite of all sights, Delphi and Meteora. The drive was long but all worth it.
Everything went according to plan Delphi was great and Meteora was beyond expectations
Wonderful trip to Delphi and Meteora! The guides were helpful and somehow entertaining. It was handled by a local tour company, and they only have certain pick-up and drop-off points my hotel not included, so I had to wake up early and go to another pick up point. The buses were nice, but the aircon was very weak! So bring a fan and a bottle of water if you take the tour in summer. Additional info: No dress requirement in Delphi, but the monasteries in Meteora require that women wear skirts and dresses with lengths below the knee and sleeved shirts or blouses. Men should wear trousers or long shorts. They provide skirts and shawls if you really don't feel like wearing any of the dress code above. We had stop-overs in nice restaurants, cafes and souvenir shops every 1.5-2 hours. : I highly recommend this tour! I learned a lot, and the places were amazing and the mountains were majestic!
Excellent trip, worth the five hour bus ride. Breath-taking scenery, nice hotel, great guide. Warning: Men need long pants and women need a skirt or large scarf knee-length to enter monasteries.
Loved this! Yes you are on a bus for a long time. But unless you plan on flying, that's what you gotta do. Definitely would recommend.
Wonderful tour of Delphi and Meteora! Our tourguide (Joy) gave us a lot of useful information about the history and culture of those two places, and we got a lot of time to explore them on our own.
This tour includes two of the most significant historical sites in Greece. The first day takes you to Delphi where you hear about the Mythical Greek Gods and the history of the Greek civilization. After a narrated tour of the site, you are taken to a Viator chosen restaurant for a delicious Greek lunch at your expense. As the bus travels through areas where history was made, you better understand why the Greeks chose to put their cities where they did.
In early evening you arrive in Kalabaka, the city at the the foot of the mountains where the monasteries are located. Our four-star Amalia Hotel is located on the outskirts of the town. After a delicious buffet dinner including a number of Greek entrees included in the tour fee, we chose to relax around the large outdoor pool.
The second day of the tour begins with a buffet full breakfast incl. in fee, and then proceeds up the mountains to the monasteries. All are encouraged to dress conservatively--men in slacks and women in skirts or dresses which cover the knee. Shirts should be at least short sleeved. However, if you arrive at the monasteries in shorts, you will be provided with a complimentary long wrap skirt to cover your legs. Your tour guide will provide some information about the monasteries, showing you icons, wood carvings and paintings and allow you some free time for picture taking and exploring. There are 6 different monasteries available to tour. Since different ones are open on different days, you will tour 2 monasteries and have photo opts on the mountain to take pictures of other monasteries from a distance. After touring the monasteries, we start the long trip back to Athens with a lunch stop and several other rest stops, arriving back in Athens in the evening.
Absolutely loved this tour! Everything about it was great. I was pleasantly surprised by the hotel accommodation and the dinner buffet there.
But most of all, I was definitely impressed by Delphi and the Meteora monasteries. Amazing photo ops!
The guides were also super nice! And I learned a lot about Greek history on this tour. The surprise stop in a certain famous spot was also very welcomed :-
One think I did not like was that we did not have the opportunity to really explore Kalambaka because we got there late in the evening just in time for a quick shower and dinner, and when we stopped by again for lunch after visiting the monasteries, we were taken to a clear tourist restaurant where droves of tourist-filled buses were parked.
I have told all of my friends and family members to include this tour on their itineraries if they plan on visiting Greece.
Delphi and Meteora are amazing places to visit. The tour ran smoothly and close to schedule. The tour guides were friendly, nice and very informative.
