Waitomo Caves and Rotorua Day Trip from Auckland

Waitomo Caves and Rotorua Day Trip from Auckland

After pickup from your centrally located hotel, relax aboard the coach from Auckland to Waitomo Caves, a renowned New Zealand attraction famous for its glowworm caverns. Follow your informative guide on a tour underground to view the icicle-shaped stalactites and learn how they were formed over eons. A boat ride takes you through the Glowworm Grotto, where myriad glowworms illuminate the chamber walls and ceilings in a breathtaking display.

Your coach stops next at the Agrodome, a working sheep and cattle farm where you’ll gain insight into the history of dairy farm milking. Watch sheep shearing demonstrations, see sheep mustering by highly trained dogs, feed young farm animals and milk a cow for an authentic Kiwi experience.

Hop back on board the coach to enjoy a boxed lunch and refreshments en route to Rotorua.

Your first stop is Te Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve. Meander past gurgling mud pools and silica terraces as your guide points out features of this geothermal wonder. Marvel at the 100-foot-high (30-meter) Pohutu Geyser; a famous natural attraction since the early 20th century, it erupts 10 to 20 times a day.

Finally, visit the Maori Arts and Crafts Institute for a look at traditional Maori customs. Discover time-honored wood carvings and weavings and learn of their significance at sacred Maori meeting houses.

End your tour in Rotorua to explore further, or choose to make the return trip to Auckland with drop-off at your hotel.

I liked a lot that tour. However I think it was be better if time to watch show had been shorter and time to see geiser had been longer.

The caves were magical. The glow worms were amazing. Watching the sheep shearing was a new experience and Rptorua was fascinating. We saw our very first live rendition of the Haka which is better than seeing it on TV.

Pick up from hotel as arranged and off we went. Driver provided commentary which made journey more interesting. Wait at caves was short and our guide took us off on our tour of the caves. The guide was informative and all too quickly our time in the silence of the caves was over. Next was the Agrodome where once again we were entertained by our guide, first in the Sherri got sheep then in our tourlf the farm animals. Finally Rotorua and the well oiled combination of our driver and guide soon saw us inside and on our way to the Haka. This was entertaining and again the commentary hit the right level. Once outside it was off to see the geothermal features and they did not disappoint, even the geyser erupted for us. I thought this was all there was to see but no in a specially adapted building there were kiwis, as this was my final trip in NZ it was a very fitting finale.

Really nice, action packed, interesting extremely well organized trip! I believe our driver/guides name was Ian. Ian was wonderful!! I was surprised that he had the responsibility of driving the bus and providing such interesting information on our tour but he did everything beautifully. I would highly recommend this trip. Next time I would spend at least 1 night in Rotorua.
