This was a great tour. Damian, our driver, was very informative and entertaining. A wonderful experience.
I would recommend this tour to my friends.
This day trip outside of Auckland is wonderful! Our driver, Dameon, was extremely knowledgeable and knew a vast amount of New Zealand's history. He kept our interest piqued during the 2.5 hour drive down to Waitomo.
The caves are wondrous. Being immersed in the dark silence whilst viewing the glowworms is an amazing feeling. Just know you'll only have about 10-minutes of viewing time in the cave.
Following that, Hobbinton was a lot of fun. If you're a fan of the books and/or movies, this retreat will not let you down. The local guides are fanatical about the stories and give you a lot of background information on the making of the films. Ending the day in the Green Dragon and having a pint was the best way to finish the tour.
The tour was fabulous! Our guide, Shelly was informative and fun. Each stop was great, couldn't have asked for a better experience. Thanks!
We really appreciated this tour and the friendliness and professionalism of our driver/guide. We recommend this high quality tour!
This is a great tour and the Hobitton Movie Set was more than I expected when it was booked but everything I hoped it would be. Waitomo Caves were fascinating followed by a great meal. The tour bus driver from Auckland to the movie set was absolutely full of valuable information about New Zealand in general and the people. We greatly appreciated his commentary and pleasant way. The bus driver from the movie set to Rotorua kept us guessing and chuckling with his fantasy tales.
A great tour.
The tour itself was fantastic. The only aspect that could be improved was that the bus driver talked, talked, and talked. He didn't seem sure of some of the facts he mentioned, and some topics probably weren't warranted. Nothing offensive, but not necessary either.
Driver very pleasant and informative on the bus, the glow worm caves were unforgettable and a drink in the Green Dragon finished off a great day!
Loved the Guide and loved being in hobbiton! Great pickup and drop off service, couldnt have asked for anything better
I've been to caves and caverns in at least 4 different countries. I've caught fireflies in the rainforest. I have never been so entranced by these experiences as I was yesterday. This is, as our obviously dedicated guide said, one of the wonders of the world. I feel very fortunate to have been able experience this fragile magic! The tour was well-organized and everything went smoothly. The trip to Hobbitton was delightful, and the countryside was the epitome of serenity. And the ginger beer at the Green Dragon was the best I've ever tasted. Again, the guide was extremely knowledgeable and informative.
Even though this was a 12 hour excursion it was great way to see New Zealand. The Caves were absolutely amazing and the tour guides really knew their tours.
Trip has good parts and parts for improvement and I'd stress I really enjoyed this trip. On the good side, you see Hobbiton in all its glory, and your guide gives you stories about which parts of Hobbiton appear in which of the LOTR/Hobbit films. For a fan of LOTR, you will never forget the visit! You have plenty of photo opportunities by Hobbit holes and even get a complimentary drink of beer in the Green Dragon pub, with the beer there being unique to Hobbiton. The Waitomo caves are a genuinely pleasant experience, and being surrounded by thousands of glow worms is very charming. In terms of what could be improved, you only get 15 minutes in the Green Dragon pub, so you don't have time to order warm food from the bar. Maybe slightly longer 30 mins? would be better. I also think that you should go to Hobbiton first, as by late afternoon the shadows of the sun can fall on Hobbiton's buildings in such a way as to impact on photographs. In the Waitomo caves you are in a dark tunnel anyway so it shouldn't matter what time of day you go at. So in short if I could offer two slight improvements, it would be a organisers should go to Hobbiton first b slightly more time in the Green Dragon pub.
Even though it rained, it was a wonderful tour. Loved Hobbiton and the caves are amazing even though the guide in the cave was not very good.
Great tour. This was a full day.The only negative was waiting for our bus back to Auckland in the cold.
Amazing tour around 600 km of panoramic views of New Zealand North Island countryside on your way to both the Waitomo caves and the Hobbiton Movie Set. WELL worth the trip!
The waitomo caves and Hobbiton are definitely unique places to see while in New Zealand. The trip was well-organized, communication from the touring company was excellent, and timetables were met. It was a fun trip for us on our first trip to New Zealand.
The Waimato caves were simply amazing! To see the glow worms inside the dark caves felt like looking at the universe with million stars. It was truly incredible! The next leg of the tour was Hobbiton movie set in the McDonald farm, which is privately owned. Our guide Paul was a wealth of knowledge. The Hobbiton is preserved beautifully and is very picturesque. The only downside was the way the tour is designed. We had to travel to a farmshow expo place and then had to piggyback to Hobbiton, making a long day longer.
