Duration: 3.5 hours (approx.)
Location: Huahine, Tahiti
Product code: 2830HCIRCHP
This private tour allows for greater flexibility and a chance to escape the crowds! Get the most out of your day as you explore Huahine an island of gorgeous scenery, splendid beaches and deep bays, lush vegetation and archaeological remains.
HUAHINE is actually two islands, HUAHINE NUI (Big Huahine) to the north and HUAHINE ITI (Little Huahine) to the south. The islands are only barely separated and at low tide you can wade from one to the other, a road bridge spans the narrow gap. A Polynesian legend relates that the split came about when the God Hiro ploughed his mighty canoe into the island, creating Bourayne Bay to the west and Maroe Bay to the East.
Start today with HUAHIN NUI and discover the archeological VILLAGE of MAEVA. Prior to European influence, Maeva was the seat of royal power on the island and MARAE are still found along the shoreline, scattered among the modern buildings of the village, and up the slopes of Matairea Hill. Excavations and restorations of the site commence in 1923 and nearly 30 marae have been located. More than half have been restored, making this the most extensive site in Polynesia.
Also discover the shallow expense of LAKE FAUNA NUI (also known as Lake Maeva) which is, infact an inlet from the sea. There is a number of V-shaped fish traps, made from coral blocks. These traps have been here for centuries and some are still in use today. The tips of the Vs point towards the ocean so that fish, as they are pulled towards the sea by an ebb tide, are trapped in the Vs as the long stone arms emerge above the water level. Once they are in the circular basin at the point of the trap the fish are easily caught, usually by net or harpoon.
You will finish this tour with a drive through the VILLAGE of FARE, the capital of Huahine, bustling with activity.
The Village of Maeva is a wealth of archaeological sites
