2008 Performances
SWAN LAKE
Dates: April 4th to 24th (except April 6th, 13th and 20th)
Swan Lake is one of the world's favourite ballets and this dazzling version - created by Australian choreographer Graeme Murphy - is one of our most successful productions ever. It's not hard to see why. Set to Tchaikovsky's immortal music, this spectacular interpretation features a contemporary storyline full of drama, wit and passion. Murphy has brought the spirit and scale of classical ballet into the 21st century with extraordinary results. Audiences and critics in London, Cardiff, Shanghai and Tokyo have agreed. Now it's your turn to either discover - or re-visit - the charms of this multi-award winning ballet!
JEROME ROBBINS - A CELEBRATION
Dates: April 30th to May 19th (except May 4th, 7th, 9th and 18th)
Jerome Robbins is perhaps best known for his choreography and co-direction of the massively influential film West Side Story. But Robbins was also an enormously successful choreographer for theatre and ballet during his lifetime, and his works continue to be performed around the world ten years after his death. This programme salutes Robbins by presenting very different sides to his imagination, ranging from the intriguingly dark to the laugh-out-loud funny. The programme features four of his most celebrated works, The Cage, A Suite of Dances, Afternoon of a Faun and The Concert which are set to extraordinary scores by musical greats Stravinsky, Bach, Debussy and Chopin respectively.
INTERPLAY
Dates: November 6th to 25th (except November 9th, 16th and 23rd)
If you think ballet is all about the tutu, think again. We asked three choreographers and three composers to collaborate on entirely new works for the Interplay programme, highlighting the electric partnership between dance and music. The result - three world premieres that will demonstrate the athleticism and invention of dance today. The stylish and energetic works of New York-born Nicolo Fonte and Toronto-based Matjash Mrozewski have been grabbing attention on the international dance scene. In Interplay, their latest creations will be performed alongside a new work by Australian Stephen Baynes, whose 2007 piece Constant Variants was acclaimed by The Daily Telegraph as 'stylish and successful... another success story for Baynes'. Featuring brand new music from leading Australian composers Gerard Brophy, Richard Mills and Ross Edwards, this one is as much for the music lovers as for those looking for a more physical, stripped-back dance experience.
MANON
Dates: November 28th to December 17th (exept November 30th plus December 7th and 14th)
Manon is a story of passion, greed and betrayal, played out in the 18th century salons of Paris and the steamy swamps of Louisiana. A beautiful but naïve young woman, Manon Lescaut must choose between the penniless student she loves, and the lure of luxury offered by a mysterious older man. Ravishing sets and costumes and the romantic sweep of Jules Massenet's music provide a suitably opulent backdrop to Manon's fateful choice and its devastating consequences. Not seen in Australia for almost ten years, Manon is always an audience favourite, and offers an engrossing and spectacular night in the theatre!
