What You Can Expect
Your 10.5-hour grand tour of Provence begins with morning pickup from your Avignon hotel. Take a comfortable seat and enjoy scenic views of the Provençal countryside as you head north to your first stop, the town of Orange. With your expert guide, explore the ancient town founded by Romans in 35 BC. View the Triumphal Arch adorned with narrative friezes and the Théâtre antique d’Orange (Antique Theater of Orange), a magnificent Roman amphitheater described as the most impressive Roman sight in France.
Next, take a short drive to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, situated at the center of fertile wine country. Admire rolling hills carpeted in vineyards, learn about the local varietals, and stop at a charming vineyard to sample some fine wine. Take some time in Châteauneuf-du-Pape to have lunch (own expense) before heading to the awesome Pont du Gard. Considered an ancient work of art, this UNESCO-listed construction is the highest of all elevated Roman aqueducts. Admire the preserved three-tiered structure that spans the mighty Gardon River.
Then continue south to the wild Alpilles Mountains and Les Baux de Provence – a fortified medieval village carved straight from the limestone-rich earth. Take some time to explore and snap photos from the lofty vantage point over the Luberon plains. The final leg of your tour heads into the Luberon region to visit the stunning hilltop villages of Gordes and Roussillon. Admire the medieval architecture and the natural wonders that surround these distinctive towns. Then grab any last souvenirs before heading back to Avignon, where you will be returned to you hotel in the evening.
It was a very comprehensive tour. The guide was excellent and had great knowledge of the area. We really enjoyed it. We highly recommend it.
Great guide first of all. The tour covered a lot of places and would recommend if this is your first visit to the area and want a bit of overview of things for future visits. Will definitely book again from the tour company and the guide.
Very good tour with an excellent guide and we would highly recommend it.. The only suggestion we would like to make is that some provision be made for a lunch break.
The Guide cum driver Ms Solene was excellent.
When we left our wine purchased during the tour in the vehicle when the tour had ended.
She took the trouble to bring them to our hotel.
We appreciate it very much.
She is flexible and kind and hardworking too.
This tour was amazing. A long and full day but well worth it. The guide knew exactly how much time to leave us at each location never too long and always had enough time. We loved everywhere we went. So hard to pick a favorite :
This was a highlight of our trip to France. Carole was an amazing guide! She is really an historian, not simply a guide - add knowledge to great driving skills. We would HIGHLY recommend this trip!
This tour was awesome - visited some amazing places that are not easily accessible without a car and the guided tour of the winery was great.
Our tour guide Caroline was very informative, enthusiastic and warm, and used a lot of her own experiences and knowledge to make it very interesting. Do it!
Very good tour. Had time to buy lunch but having something at a nice winery would have been fun,
Very comprehensive tour though.
This was a wonderful day - lots of driving in a mini van but we visited wonderful picturesque locations. It was also the first wine tour I've ever done where a sommelier instructed you on how to drink and taste wine properly. The guide was very accommodating and knowledgeable. I do think that it would be advisable to build in an opportunity to eat lunch at one of the many quaint little restaurants in Rousillon rather than trying to grab something on the run. Because we travelled so far, it sometimes felt like we had to dash into a village and then dash back to be on time to board the van. The Pont du Gard was awe inspiring! So glad I saw it. Some time could have been taken away from the visit to the amphitheatre in Orange to allow more time in other locations. The amphitheatre is wonderful but it was a fairly lengthy stop because we followed the audio tape. If the guide did the tour herself, this might expedite things somewhat. Loved this tour however as it took you to places that are difficult to reach on your own and yet are considered some of the most beautiful villages in France.
Unbelievable all day tour of Provence. Saw so many wonderful sights in a comfortable, air-conditioned van with 6 other people. Our driver was knowledgeable and personable. A great trip!
