What You Can Expect

Barcelona Super Saver: Sitges, Freixenet Cava Wine Cellars and Montserrat Tour

Barcelona Super Saver: Sitges, Freixenet Cava Wine Cellars and Montserrat Tour

Freixenet Cava Cellars and Sitges Tour: (5 hours)
Leave Barcelona by air-conditioned coach, and start your day with a visit to the Freixenet cava cellars, roughly X hours away. Hear the history of the family-run business from a local guide, and then enjoy a tour through the old cellars to learn how cava — the Spanish sparkling wine — is made.

Next, board a small train to travel through a section of the 12-miles (20-km) network of underground cava cellars before arriving at the all-important tasting room. Sample a cava specialties from the Freixenet range, and purchase your favorite, if you wish.

Continue from the cava caves to the quaint coastal village of Sitges, one of Catalonia's top seaside destinations. This village is said to bask in nearly 300 days of sunshine a year and is home to more than 15 beaches. Take a walking tour through the village, and then enjoy some free time to explore on your own before returning to Barcelona. After a drop-off in the city center, enjoy 1.5 hours at leisure before your afternoon tour starts.

Montserrat Royal Basilica Tour and Cog-Wheel Train Ride: (4.5 hours)
After driving through picturesque little villages, arrive in the small town of Monistrol to hop aboard your cog-wheel train for your 20-minute ride through the mountains. Gaze out at the glorious scenery, and hop out on the craggy mountain of Montserrat, a peak that rises to roughly 4,051 feet (1,235 meters).

The Royal Basilica of Montserrat has been one of Spain's most important pilgrimage sites for hundreds of years, due to its famous 12th-century Romanesque carving of the Virgen Moroneta (the Black Virgin). On weekday afternoons, there is the opportunity to hear one of Europe's oldest children's choirs: La Escolania de Montserrat.

After hearing an introduction to Montserrat from your guide, learning about its importance in past and present times, use your free time (roughly 2 hours) to explore independently and discover the site’s magic on your own. Then, meet back up with your guide to enjoy a tasting of four typical Montserrat liquors and learn more details about the site by watching the 'Montserrat Inside Closed Doors' video, at the visitor's center. Later, travel back to Barcelona by coach.

It's nice that the day is broken into 2 parts. morning at the winery and Sitges and then back to the city to head back out to Montserrat. Tour guides were excellent and there was a nice amount of free time. Well worth the money.
