What You Can Expect

Montserrat Royal Basilica Half-Day Trip from Barcelona

Montserrat Royal Basilica Half-Day Trip from Barcelona

Leave central Barcelona by air-conditioned coach and head to the mountain of Montserrat, a cluster of cone-like peaks that reach up to 4,051 feet (1,235 meters) in height to the north of the city.

As you travel, pass through postcard-pretty villages and hear tales from your guide about Montserrat’s main claim-to-fame — the magnificent Royal Basilica and Monastery of Montserrat. This spectacular mountainside church and Benedictine abbey is best known for its Black Madonna (La Moroneta), a statue of the Virgin Mary that has made it one of Spain’s most popular pilgrimage sites for centuries.

Admire the epic landscapes as you ascend the mountain, and on arrival, drink in the breathtaking views down over the countryside and Barcelona. Then, after an introduction to Montserrat’s history, use your entrance ticket to head inside and enjoy free time to explore this incredible place as you want.

Perhaps marvel at the vast basilica and explore its echoing interior, with its ornate hanging candles and echoing chapels. Gaze at the revered Black Madonna, a small wooden statue housed in small room, and learn the story behind this hallowed sculpture. Then, if time allows, walk up to the grotto, traditionally held to be where the statue was discovered. And if your tour is on a weekday (select dates only), perhaps hear a recital by the Escolania, one of the most renowned boys’ choirs in Europe.

Maybe also take a walk through Montserrat’s audiovisual museum to learn about the daily life of the monks, and perhaps finish with at the gift shop to taste and perhaps buy (own expense) some of the traditional liquors made at the monastery.

After roughly 2.5 hours of exploring independently, return to Barcelona by coach where your trip ends.

My favorite place to visit along with Ronda. The scenery here is spectacular. Not visiting Montserrat while being in Barcelona is like going to Granada and not visiting the Alhambra. Make sure you add it to your schedule you will understand why once you see it. Fernando was our tour guide and he was great.

We were able to do everything we thought was included. The audiovisual movie, the liquer tasting, the boy choir and the cathedral were everything and more.

The trip up there has some breathtaking views and the monastery itself is classically beautiful. It was an amazing day. You'd be sorry to miss this. Tour guide was helpful and bus was comfortable.

Great tour and we liked the amount of time we were allowed to spend on our own. Only problem was a loud, clanking noise on the bus that made it quite difficult to hear our guide.

Our trip was wonderful!! It was nice of you to arrange for the most beautiful weather, too. Caroline, our guide, gave us a tremendous amount of information about Montserrat and the Monastery. It was a fantastic time.

This was not on our original plans for our Barcelona visit. We are so glad we found this treasure! Transportation and guide was excellent and most enjoyable. Beautifully set in the mountains north of Barcelona, this Basilica is exquisite. Our favorite part of the tour was a visit to the art museum next to the plaza. So many wonderful paintings and sculptures by famous artists.
