Read what other Viator.com travelers think about the Skip-the-Line: Neuschwanstein Castle Tour from Fuessen Including Horse-Drawn Carriage Ride. What they loved, what they liked and what they think could be improved, it's all here to help you make the most of your next trip.
Our half day tour of Neuschwanstein castle was managed very well although a little bit more information on what was happening at each stopping point would have been nice. I guess the tour operators do this every day and expect the punters to know exactly what is expected at every stop. A minor quibble on what was a sensational tour to celebrate our sons's 8th birthday all the way from Australia. The castle interior was way better than I expected for a castle that was so shortly lived in.
This was fascinating; it was interesting to see how the castle was constructed as well as the two finished floors. Our guide was a very competent, cheerful young woman---so sorry I did not write down her name---who was flexible, willing, and able to fill in the sparse tour information given by another inside-the-castle guide. The woman inside was competent, but did not go into much detail about the castle, including the fact that she neglected to mention that this castle was used by Hitler to store stolen art which was found by the Allies' Monuments Men, and was featured in the movie by the same title. We highly recommend this tour!
The tour was exactly as described on the website. Our tour guide picked us up promptly at the designated location. We then had very easy access to the castle tour. What was not described was how friendly and knowledgeable our tour guide was. We greatly enjoyed hearing additional history about the famed King Ludwig 11 of Bavaria and the castle. Our tour guide took us on a walk around the magnificent area before our tour began. The convenience of not having to wait in line to buy tickets, and to have had our tour guide get us around in what could have been a confusing environment, was worth the expense of the tour. The horse and buggy ride on the way down from the castle was an added plus.
It was wonderful being personally escorted to Neuschwanstein, skipping the line, and being shown all the sites around castle without the usual hustle-bustle of popular attractions like that. Our tour guide, Caroline, was great. Very friendly and very knowledgeable. We would absolutely recommend this tour to others.
It was clear from the start that a small group tour was the way to go and this is exactly what Peter provided. Be prepared for massive crowds and be fit enough to manage steep inclines/declines before you reach the castle. once inside you will then ascend approximately 180 steps, so make sure you wear good shoes and are fit enough to manage as the castle tour guide doesn't wait. Over all this was well worth the money and I would recommend it to anyone.
The guide was pleasant and knowledgeable and good company. However, we did not get the horse-drawn carriage ride back to Fussen because of a bunch of tourists commandeered all the coaches. If you can't guarantee an inclusion, don't advertise it.
Also we did not get the leisurely stroll around Alpensee - as soon as we reached Hohenschwangau we were bundled into the car and returned to Fussen.
In summary, 6 out of 10.
We were picked up at the hotel as arranged and taken to the car park at the castle. Our guide bought the tickets (pre-arranged? don't know.) and we then had to join the queue for the shuttle bus (no skip-the-line here). There was quite a fairly steep downwards walk and then upwards walk to the castle and for someone who struggles with walking it wouldn't be easy - golf type buggies would be much appreciated. Our tickets had allocated time slots for beginning the tour. Our guide did not join us but said she would wait outside - had thought we would be getting a personal tour. The inside of the castle was a disappointment - we did not see many rooms and what we did see was dark and barely furnished. There are many spiral steps to climb so be warned! Our guide was waiting for us outside and led us down a fairly steep road to the donkeys and carts. Then back to the carpark, transfer to the car and back to the hotel. Not quite what I had expected. I had hoped that we would be picked up and then under the sole leadership of our guide until the end of the tour I did not expect to queue for the shuttle bus or to be conducted round the castle in a larger group. However, I would say that our guide was very knowledgeable and pleasant and that perhaps some things were out of her control i.e. tours can only be conducted by people employed directly at the castle. I would rate our guide quite highly (she spoke excellent English) and would book through Viator again but suspect the regulations in place hampered our skip-the-line experience.
Ok, so I am giving this two stars instead of one just because the castle is awesome. But the castle tour has nothing to do with the Viator tour. Right from the start it seemed something was off. One of the guides had her screaming baby with her and then dumped us on another guide who knew NOTHING. Peter took us up the hill, and the only "guiding" he provided was pointing at the path and then pointing at the two castles. It was ridiculous. Other guides were giving fascinating talks about the castle's origins, so we listened to them instead. Then the bus didn't show up to pick us up and take us to Fussen. The tour was supposed to conclude at the station by 1:00, and we had planned our whole day around that time, as we had another tour in the afternoon/evening. We ended up have to take a city bus to the station, which took forever. We missed our other tour due to the disorganization of this company and its employees. Major disappointment and a loss of money. This was our only bad tour of the entire trip.
