3-Day Private Hiking Adventure
Enjoy adventurous and sometimes challenging hikes led by an expert English-speaking guide, who’ll provide assistance, support and interesting commentary about the wall throughout your journey. On your first day, you’ll receive an introductory briefing regarding the terrain and safety requirements.
You'll hike between 4 and 10 miles (6 and 16 km) every day and ascend between 1,640 and 2,625 feet (500 and 800 meters), and there will always be a support vehicle and driver nearby for assistance.
You'll stay at a hotel and then in a village guesthouse, both near the wall. Daily meals are included: picnic lunches include sandwiches, fruit, cookies and nuts, and breakfasts and dinners will be cooked at your campsite or in a local farmer’s home. You'll also have hot tea or coffee every morning and water throughout your trip.
For a detailed schedule, see the Itinerary section below.
Itinerary
Morning pickup from your hotel in Beijing will take you to the Great Wall at Gubeikou. You’ll first receive an introduction and briefing from your guide about the terrain, your itinerary and safety requirements.
As you hike along with your guide, see lush vegetation and learn how this part of the wall has crumbled because in the 1950s local farmers took bricks from the wall to build their houses.
Pass by a local village and walk around the inner circle of wall, which was the second defense in case the main wall was breached. Continue walking until the late afternoon, when you’ll make a detour through a village and approach the Jinshanling section of the wall.
Today, you’ll hike 10 miles (16 km) for a total of 4-5 hours, and will rest for a 3-4 hours to take in the views and have lunch. Stay overnight at a hotel near the wall.
Overnight: Jinshanling Hotel near Jinshanling
Day 2: Jinshanling -- Simatai (B, L, D)
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel to gear up for today’s hike to Simatai, a popular route among avid hikers.
Follow your guide along the Jinshanling section, which has preserved its original appearance dating back almost 400 years.
Pass watchtowers including Crenel Building (Zhuanduokou Tower), Open Tower (Changlouzi Tower) and Sifang Terrace (Sifangtai Tower), among many others.
You’ll hike 6 miles (10 km) and ascend 2,066 feet (630 meters) for a total of 4.5 hours. Enjoy 2 hours of rest time to enjoy the scenery and eat a picnic lunch. At the end of the day, you'll stay overnight in a guesthouse in a village near the wall.
Overnight: Guesthouse in Lao Dong Po Village near Simatai
Day 3: Simatai -- Beijing (B, L)
In the morning, enjoy a home-cooked breakfast in the guesthouse and then begin today’s hike along Simatai.
Visit Wang Jing Tower (Watching Beijing Tower) and climb to the top for bird’s-eye views of the surrounding mountains and, on a clear day, the city of Beijing.
You’ll hike 4 miles (6 km) and ascend 1,768 feet (539 meters) for a total of almost 2 hours. Break for 1.5 hours to soak in views. You’ll enjoy lunch back at the campsite in the afternoon and then be taken by comfortable, private vehicle back to your Beijing to conclude your tour.
