Good guide give us a lot of imformations about China. Cable car up and slide down from the wall - fantastic. Very scenic part of the wall. Very good lunch.
This wall is really something to see. Make sure you go to Mutianyu as it is not so touristy or crowded as other parts. We went up by chairlift and down by toboggan. Hardly any other people where we were. Our guide Jackie Li was fantastic. Do the private tour it is definitely worth it.
I found it a bit uncomfortable at first because it was me and my daughter and our guide was a male and I didn't realise we were only going with him and his driver. He was very nice informative once we started chatting. A bit scary at times with the driving. But apart from that it was the was ok.
A good day; seemed a little dear but saw nothing (trustworthy!) cheaper anywhere, not even from the hotel tour desk. Great to see the Wall. You wouldn't have time to walk up and back so the cable car is a necessary extra - 80yuan return trip and you choose cable or luge back down. We did the luge back down - and you can control the speed downhill yourself so it is fun, give it a go! Jason was our guide, very nice man and did a good job. Car and driver good. Lunch was fine with lots of dishes; the jade factory was interesting. Only disappointment is the fact that you can't actually go inside the excavated tombs, its just the above ground building with some of the relics inside. So the "underground Palace" isn't open to the public at all. A good day out, recommended.
Our guide was just so-so. He did not go to the wall with us, instead sat in the car and waited. He did not provide much information - was more a translator for the driver of the van. We had much better luck when we hired a private guide the following day.
We booked a private tour in order to have flexibility, and found that our guide appeared to have a different view of the day. Our visit to the Great Wall was set at a mere 2 hours, while we could have spent much longer there.
We felt rushed, for no reason other than the fact that we were booked for a HORRIBLE lunch at the Jade Factory, where a sales person (who was very sick) followed my every step through the store in an attempt to sell us junk. We did not ask to visit the Jade factory and felt the high pressure sales approach was very inappropriate.
We would have loved to have spent more time visiting the Spirit Way.
Our guide gave us a choice to visit a tea house or a silk factory on the way home. We chose the silk factory, and again felt pressured to make a purchase. BTW, we did buy a "king" size comforter, which turns out to be no more than a full to queen size.
All in all, our guide was well spoken and knowledgeable. Had we confined our activities to touring, it would have been a great day. BTW, Our only bad meal in the entire trip was had during this tour.
The tour operator had misplaced our booking so had to scrambled on the morning to find someone to take us. Theguide and driver didn't arrive till 9.15am, some 1 and a 1/2 hours late. By this time peak hour traffic had arrived so we didnt arrive at the Great Wall till 11am. The guide only wanted to give us 1 hour but I told him to forget the Jade Museum and tea ceremony so we stayed at the wall till I decided, which annoyed the guide but always felt pressured. Not a good experience, very disorganised for the money we paid.
