Our open door helicopter ride over the volcanoes was brilliant.
The check in process good, the safety briefing was well done as was getting us into the helicopter, safely strapped in and off we went.
The lava was present, you could feel the heat as we flew in close over it and to see it us close was amazing.
Joyce our pilot was tremendous, she kept us informed with all sorts of useful information.
All in all a great trip to do and well worth it -
Viator.com bombarded me with so many e-mails after I booked the trip that I missed the e-mail saying they could not accommodate me. Two days after I booked the flight they e-mailed me saying the time I selected was unavailable. Two days! By that time I did not have web access. My son and I drove two + hours only to find out that we had to wait over four hours for our flight.
The flight was worth it and the company we book was very nice, but to waste four hours is unacceptable. When the tour company contacted Viator about this, they said nothing could be done. Apparently from the tour company this has happened more than once.
What a wonderful experience with no doors, very exciting would thoroughly recommend the trip
If you're going to do one tour on the big island, do this. It's exceptional. It's a thrilling way of seeing one of the most amazing sights on this planet. Dress warm, it gets cold up there!
It was amazing! We actually got to see two lava flows into the ocean and pools of lava formed while we were flying back, so we have pictures of that as well. I would definitely recommend the open door experience, but make sure you dress warmly and ladies, tie back your hair. It's very windy up there.
It was one of the highlights of our vacation. Loved every minute of it.
Would highly recommend it. Worth every penny!!!

A few pictures to follow.
Out trip was awesome. Rick is an awesome pilot and kept us steady even in challenging weather conditions. Very professional staff as well.
Fantastic, thrill ride. We flew over macadamia nuts plantations, lava fields and then into the crater of an active volcano!!!!! Our very obliging pilot then circled over the cruise ship that we were on. Highly recommend.
Fantastic trip, pilot really good, telling us interesting things but not continually chatting. highly recommend this trip
nice flight just wish the pilot would have gotten low to water falls like i saw another helicopter
This trip was enjoyable, although 4 people + the pilot was a bit of a squash in a tiny helicopter! My partner and I were in the front, in a seat meant for 1. The pilot took us over the eruption site, up to about 1400 feet, unfortunately all we could see were 2 major steam plumes, and a steam vent. There was a tiny bit of fire visible in one part of the crater, but if you are expecting a major eruption as in the pictures, you will be disappointed. i think you would have to be extremely lucky to see one. The pilot gave a running commentary, but whether it was his accent or a poor sound system, we could understand very little of what he said, so in effect gave up and just looked out. Yes it was, I suppose, worth doing, as you can't see the steam plumes close up by any other method (25 years ago you could walk to the edge and see the lava flowing into the sea, but the coast has moved out 11 miles since then!), but it was very expensive. Still, I guess most people only go once (I have been lucky enough to go 4 times, but that's it now). Do it, but if an ordinary (closed door) helicopter is cheaper, then I would take that option.
Awesome tour, seen lava flowing into the ocean. Really cold with no doors on. Only complaint is they kept switching our time to accommodate the weight requirement. I was not impressed with that. I would do it again!
While it's no fault of the company, the volcano was completely inactive and made for a less than spectacular trip. Warning: very windy and chilly, wear pants. That said, it was exhilarating and exciting. I would recommend checking on how active the volcano is before dropping $500 (for 2 people).
