We had a great time and think everyone should do something like this. I had a little trouble on one of the uphill areas, not being a spring chicken at 56, but our guide was supportive and encouraging and I finished it without being in the van....Wonderful...
The tour was a great way to see the highlights on the chain of craters road. Our tour guide and driver were very knowledgeable and provided context to both the volcanology and local understanding. No one who can ride a bike should be frightened of the 14 mile bicycle trip. With 1 hill up that was tough but several hills down, the trip was very much a good adventure.
Our experience with the tour was excellent until we encountered a torrential downpour and had to cut shot the last part of the tour. The tour guide, Eric, was very personable and possessed an outstanding amount of information about the volcano and the surrounding flora and fauna. The bikes were in great condition, and the friendly driver and helper, Willie, did an excellent job with support and assistance throughout the entire tour. The wine tasting was a nice touch! I would certainly recommend this tour to anyone wanting a closer and more intimate experience seeing Kiluaea for the first time. I would rate the tour overall at 5 stars, but we were very disappointed that we had to end it early due to the heavy rain! :-(
Our guide made this tour!! It was a lot of fun riding around the rim of the volcano crater and thru the rainforest but the guide was superb. Eric was soooo knowledgable, enthusiastic and just awesome. Thanks for making our trip memorable! Don't book the trip based on the wine tour - it did not amount to much.
This was a great fun day! The guide was very knowledgeable and interesting, and made the whole day entertaining!
I was tempted not to do this tour because I don't cycle but it was completely fine - not tough terrain, and 95% on paved roads, so totally worth doing.
I would recommend this to all, as a great way to explore Kilaeua!
Our guides were AWESOME!!! Though it started with some drizzle, we were so pleasantly surprised by the attention to detail when Willie not only pulled out the rainjackets, but towels for our faces and sunglasses. We were extremely impressed with the guide's knowledge and passion of delivery of the information at the various stops. The passion really makes a big difference. Even though you know he's given the tour many times, he still delivers it with the passion of someone who has discovered something for the first time. The routing was good, though perhaps a bit harder than some of the riders expected but the pace was good. There were 4 of us in the group and we all Loved It! We want to thank them!! The only piece that was a bit odd was the wine tasting. 3 groups showed up at the same time so was a bit disorganized but overall a great way to spend the day.
We had a great time! The bike ride was tough at times but not overly strenuous. The length of the ride was just right and covered various terrain and surroundings with spectacular sights!
The bike trip was incredible. It was the highlight of our trip to the Big Island. I have very little experience biking and this was no problem. It rained almost the whole time but it was still a great experience. The wine tasting at the end is definitely a bonus. The guides were very knowledgeable and fun.
We really enjoyed the tour because we were able to view the volcano from all sort of great vantage points. We recommend a tour with a geologist and a native to the island. We had plenty of great snacks and drinks along the way, but you should be able to know how to switch gears on a bike to make it easier on yourself. The tour was great, we were a little sad we didn't see any lava but that is because the lava flow has moved to another side side of the volcano. Speak to staff about a special tour that offers views specifically of the volcano. Overall the staff was very up on their knowledge of geology and the history of the flows.
A fascinating way to see and learn about the volcanoes/volcanic activity on the "Big Island". Be sure to check the weather forcast for rain and dress accordingly.
I would have said it was a 4 star but the booking experience was the issue. We wanted a full day and they wanted us to change our schedule bc of lack of people wanting to ride that day. I told them the day we booked was the only time we could do it; this was 2 weeks prior to the event. The day before the event, they said we either had to change our day for a full ride, cancel, or do a half day. Due to the inability to make other arrangements in such short time, we took the half day with no lunch or wine tasting.
The tour was great! Eric was super knowledgeable and it was a great way to tour the volcano. Eric and the driver, Willie were super nice.
