It was great. But be ready to spend 7 and a half to 8 hours start to finish. For astronomy buffs this is time well spent. Our guide Nate was outstanding.
Great trip up Mauna Kea! The drive was long and it was cold at the top, but the our guide (Nate) was terrific, full of information and very passionate about his work. Unfortunately it was a bit cloudy the night of our trip, but overall we enjoyed ourselves.
Our initial booking was cancelled due to bad weather, but the company were very accommodating in rebooking us on an acceptable date. The tour guide was very professional. We were well informed of where we would be picked up (we were not in a resort/hotel). After being picked up, our guide made sure our car was parked in a very safe spot, and showed us where to park it. The trip to the summit was excellent, and afterwards the guide did a very professional and knowledgeable exploration of the Hawaiian sky. This tour was a highlight of our trip.
This was a highlight of our 3-week trip. It was a great experience. Studiying the night time sky was awesome as was getting to see the observatories and sunset at the Mauna Kea summit. Our driver/guide was very knowledgeable and personable. Although parts of the drive up the summit can be a bit rocky and the meal was average, this excursion is still well woth it. Also, participants need to be aware that the altitude at the summit (14,000 ft.) can be stressful.
it was an excellent tour, extremely well organised, every eventuality catered for. Our guide, Jon, was a marvel of information on a huge variety of topics. The one thing he could not guarantee was a clear night sky for the star gazing! However, we enjoyed seeing Venus! Jon also made sure that everyone was ok, he had time for every one and every question, he even checked around the outside of the car of a member of our group on our return, to make sure she would be ok to return to her 'home'. I would recommend this tour and "Hawaii Forest and Trail" without any hesitation
Excellent tour and very knowledgeable guide. When they say bring warm clothes, definitely listen. It gets mighty cold up there (and wind chill to boot). Gloves are highly recommended as well.
Great trip. Local vendor was excellent. This is a tour we would think about doing again ...
Magnificent. Bus driver was great. Highly recommend this trip. Sunset was spectacular.
A long drive but with our awesome guide Nat providing us with island facts and history it was a great road trip. The view and sunset "from the top" was awesome. The astronomy session Nat gave us was excellent and informative. Learned a bunch and would highly recommend this tour.
This star-gazing tour was a highlight of our trip to the Big Island. Greg, our guide, was like an encyclopedia with his knowledge of the sky and the stars. It was a long day and we were really tired at the end, but it was one of those once in a lifetime experiences which we'll never forget. Thanks Hawaii Forest and Trail; a great time.
a trip of a lifetime. seeing the sky above cloud level, watching the sun sink through those clouds and then seeing the stars etc was stunning. Our guide really knew his stuff and the supply of warm jackets and hot chocolate was perfect.
