What You Can Expect

Private Tour: Classical Bologna Walking Tour

Classical Bologna Private Walking Tour

Explore the medieval center of Bologna with a private guide. Known as 'Red Bologna', for the soft red colors of many of its buildings and also the city's left-leaning politics, and 'Bologna the Fat,' because it's one of the best food cities in Europe, Emilia Romagna's largest city offers much to see and do.

Stroll around the streets with your guide, passing by Bologna University, the oldest university in Europe. Perambulate past dozens of palaces and churches as you walk along underneath the arcaded sidewalks. Bologna boasts 25 miles (40 kilometers) of covered arcaded walkways. Spend some time lingering in Piazza Maggiore. Stop by the Fountain of Neptune and learn about its history. Hear all about the two towers, the iconic symbols of the city, and learn why one of them is leaning. View the Medieval Market and Loggia Dei Mercanti, the Anatomy Theater (closed Saturday afternoon and Sunday), Basilica of San Petronio, the Archiginnasio and the Complex of Santo Stefano.

If you there's more time, extend the tour to include San Giacomo, the Oratory of Santa Cecilia, San Domenico of the Sanctuary of San Luca.

Because this is a private tour, consider letting the guide know before the tour about special interests so the guide can be fully prepared.

Tourguide Federico Angelini: Exceptional Tour given by professional tourguide. We completed the Classical Bologna Walking Tour visiting the World's First University Museum, the cathedral, and several museums. Along our walk we were shown all the historical sites and given the significance of each in an organized manner, providing us a timeline of the city. Our guide knew the painter/sculptor of each painting/sculpture we viewed, as well as it's significance in art history. He knew where to take us and modified our walk to our pace and taste. His English was outstanding and his mannerism was delightful. We would certainly choose to take this tour again and any others because of his professionalism. Thank you very much!!!

Having just the two of us expertly guided around central Bologna was a terrific introduction to this fascinating city on our first morning in Italy ( a good way to walk off jetlag having flown direct from Australia!). Our guide was full of expert knowledge and anecdote, and the tour covered a good balance of history, architecture and gastronomy. Our tour finished off outside the San Stefano complex, where we gained an interesting insight into its medieval origins of tourism and whetted our appetite further to explore. A great tour to start our stay in Bologna. Well done.
