Small-Group Food and Wine Tour from Bologna Including Lunch

Find out more about the production of balsamic vinegar

Your guide will pick you up from your selected departure point in Bologna in the morning. Come with an appetite, as you’ll enjoy lots of tastings and a full lunch on this all-day food and wine tour of Bologna and Modena, two culinary powerhouses in the Emilia-Romagna region.

After a 45-minute drive by minivan, arrive at your first stop, a local Parmesan cheese producer. Perhaps the most famous and widely used Italian cheese, Parmesan has been around since the Middle Ages. Get a behind-the-scenes look at how Parmesan is made on your tour of the production room, cooking area, salt pools and aging room. Then taste the finished product, noting the complex combination of bold and subtle flavors.

Your next stop is a traditional balsamic vinegar producer. This Italian staple dates back to Roman times, and is made by the natural fermentation and acetification of cooked grape 'must' (concentrated juice) before being aged in small casks made of different kinds of precious woods. Sample a variety of aged vinegars — including one that’s aged more than 25 years!

Satisfy your salt craving at your next stop, a local ham factory where you’ll learn the secrets of Italian cured meats and sample some prosciutto.

After teasing your palate, it’s time to sit down to a wonderful Italian lunch. Head to a family-run restaurant and savor a 4-course meal of traditional specialties accompanied by local wines (sample menu below). Your guide will tell you the secrets behind the delicious dishes served and give you their recipes.Head back to Bologna in the late afternoon.

We had a great day with a very knowledgable guide and a wonderful driver. The parmesan, balsamic vinegar and the ham 'factories' were all very interesting made all the better by the tasting of their magnificent products.
The day was punctuated by a wonderful 4 course meal in the hills at a family taverna where we all were made so welcome and the hosts were so generous with their lovely homemade food and hospitality. Because of the rain we had to eat inside but it certainly didn't spoil the day which was packed with marvelous memories .
