What You Can Expect

Cairns Night Zoo Safari and Barbecue Dinner

Cairns Night Zoo Safari and Barbecue Dinner

Recreate the experience of an evening bush safari at the Cairns Night Zoo. After pickup at your Cairns or Palm Cove hotel (if option selected), begin with a hearty Aussie barbecue featuring grilled steaks, chicken, sausage and prawns served with salads and your choice of beer or wine. (See Itinerary below for a sample menu.)

After the feast, head off into the darkened zoo habitats armed with a flashlight for some nighttime wildlife spotting. Experience the thrill of seeing a pair of glowing croc eyes peering out in the darkness and shining a torch on other nocturnal creatures like possums and owls. Learn about Australia’s amazing animals with live zookeeper demonstrations, and opt to pose for pictures with a cuddly koala (additional expense).

Look to the skies on clear nights for guided stargazing, and see if you can spot famous constellations like the Southern Cross and Big Dipper. The night ends on a raucous note with live music and entertainment around a campfire. Savor a traditional bush snack of billy tea and damper bread, and enjoy the company of a pack of tame resident kangaroos.

Absolutely worth doing. I went to many zoos while in Australia, but all were during the day. Night zoo is very different experience. All the creatures that are usually asleep or inactive during the day come to life after dark and it's a great time. If you are considering a koala cuddle and plan to visit other zoos, I would advise against doing it here. It's a 5 second koala cuddle photo, you don't get a lot of interaction time. If you're a koala fan like myself, I would recommend a koala encounter at Australian zoo instead.

Having the opportunity to see the animals in a nighttime setting was amazing, the animals were very active and the information provided on them and on the zoo was very interesting. Feeding the kangaroos and getting to pose with the Kuala bears was a special treat. They also fed the crocodiles, captivating! The barbecue was prepared while you got an introductory meet and greet with your fellow tourist over some wine and or beer and snacks that were provided. The food was excellent and the entertainment after the tour was fun. The best wildlife experience we had while we in Australia.

Amazing to see the animals in the dark. Added a spook factor having to use the flashlights in the zoo.
