THE CANCUN BUS SYSTEM
The bus system in Cancun is very convenient and cheap. The fare is $ 5 pesos, which works out to about US 55 cents . Bus stops are blue with a white outline of a bus (marked 'Parada', Spanish for stop) and are dotted throughout the hotel zone along Kukulkan Boulevard and Downtown. Buses are frequent. If you are going to the Hotel Zone from Downtown, look for buses marked 'Hoteles'. These go right to the far end of the Hotel Zone and make frequent stops in between. Tell the bus driver where you would like to get off or simply stand and indicate to the driver when you have reached your destination. If heading Downtown from the hotel zone, look for buses marked 'El Centro' (R#1). For short trips within the hotel zone, you can take any bus - the route number only refers to different routes in the downtown area. Do not to panic when you see the signs with arrows indicating 'Tulum', 'Xel-Ha', 'Coba', and so on. These are the names of archaeological sites outside of Cancun, but they are also the names of main streets in Cancun.
THE CANCUN TAXI SYSTEM
The taxi system in Cancun is about as convenient as the bus system. Every fifth car on the road is a taxi, and you find groups of them parked around hotels and high-traffic areas. Agree on the fare before you get in the cab. You should do it as a matter of course, in case you get an unscrupulous driver whose only English is '200 pesos! 200 pesos!. Fares to different parts of Cancun are posted in the hotel lobby and if you flag one down you will find it is slightly cheaper than hiring one parked in a taxi rank.
