I really enjoyed this trip from beginning to end and I will definitely be talking about it for a long time to come.I would recommend the early access as the crowds when we were finished were overwhelming to observe and you do miss the intense heat. Our guide Frank was exceptional and Oscar the driver
Terrific guide frank. Very knowledgeable and passionate about the rich Mayan culture.
Pick up was on time.
Well worth the early start as you beat the crowds and midday sun!
Loved this tour! The guide was very knowledgeable! We learned a great deal about the Maya and enjoyed it immensely! The one complaint is that the seats on the van are too close together, so my knees were poking into the seat ahead. I am 5'9", so for taller people, they would almost be unable to fit.
Our bus picked us up on time, and we were given our box lunch (ham and cheese sandwich, granola bar, and juice box). We had a wonderful tour guide (Frank) who spent part of the 2hr drive giving us a bit of history on the Mayan's and explaining some of what we would see. We were at the site by 10:40am and there was hardly anyone there! We got plenty of pictures with no other people in the them. Frank gave us a tour for half of our time and then let us explore on our own. By the time we were leaving the place was packed and full of people and vendors, highly recommend this tour as you will get there before the crowds. We then headed straight home, and were back at our resort by 2pm. Wonderful tour, great information and you get to beat the crowds!
Oscar and Frank were awesome. Our entire family enjoyed the tour, from ages 11-58, Frank's cultural knowledge and passionate background of the Mayan people was a treasure. We were all very fortunate to have someone as well studied in Archeology as Frank. We'd highly recommend the early morning air conditioned, toll road, mini-van excursion to Chichen Itza as one of the true ancient wonders of the world to explore and visit. The sun is intense the further south, going early was a much more enjoyable trip for all. Frank Rocks we learned so much. Although they should let the staff wear bermuda shorts.
Freddie Hoil, our guide, was there on time, with our driver (Saoul) ready at the wheel.
A fantastic, totally memorable, and informative trip en-route to Chichen Itza. Freddie REALLY knows the Maya and the region, and the background that he provides I don't think you could get anywhere else.
We were one of the first cars to arrive, so we had the pyramid and all of the other sections of Chichen Itza to ourselves! Freddie took us step by step through each major site, building a 3-dimensional picture of Mayan life and of the construction and use of these awe-inspiring edifices.
By the time he had finished his work, there was plenty of time remaining for us to explore and to check out the many vendors who'd been setting up when we arrived. By that time also, a HUGE wave of people had arrived. The pyramid was swarming as was the whole area! We have pictures of just ourselves in front of the pyramid etc., and pictures of these wonderful constructions without ONE person in the frame! Everyone else that arrived with other tours will have to provide detailed information so that THEIR family members can be picked out of the mass of people that are also included in every picture.
Take my advice, and TAKE THIS TOUR! Don't even think about another one. You'll get expert guidance, deep and unique information and facts, as well as have a great time - Freddie is a great guy with a good sense of humor too!!
There is not other way to see Chichen Itza, or I would say any other site in the area. And when you contact Viator to make your booking, don't settle for just any Guide. Say: I WANT FREDDIE HOIL!
Your tour will be a 1000% success if you take this advice (and that extra zero back there is intentional!)
Prompt, responsive service. Hard working, knowledgeable tour guide. Effective small group size. Arriving to site early in morning and returning mid-afternoon allowed us to beat the crowd. I highly recommend this venue and vendor.
Early trip was definitely worth it considering the weather gets hot pretty quickly during the day, and the amount of tourists at the same site.
The van came on time and the guide Frank was very knowledgeable and passionate about the topic. They handed out a sandwich, a bottle of water and a granola bar to all as lunch but we had those as breakfast/brunch. The guide answered all questions on top of the typical introduction of the different buildings including the pyramid. On the way back to the van, which is very new, we were handed another bottle of ice-cold water. Very timely and considerate! As the temperature has been increasing with time. I'd definitely recommend this trip vs. the normal trip to Chichen Itza during the day. And you do get back to the hotel at around 3pm so that you can enjoy the rest of the day. Van is very new and clean and comfortable, almost spotless.
It was great day, very well organized and definitely worth it to go early in a small group. The travel time passed quickly because our guide, Frank, gave us lots of background about the Maya on the way. We had many areas of Chichen Itza to ourselves before the crowds got there! Lots to look at and having an expert to explain so many features was wonderful. We got much more from the visit than we would have on our own. We left as it was getting busy, but has 3 hours there, and we're back mid afternoon, in time to cool off on the beach! Oscar, our driver, did an excellent job. We highly recommend this tour .
We enjoyed the tour a lot. We were also happy going to Chichen Itza early. When we got there, there was no tour bus, no crowd. They appeared when we were about to leave. Highly recommended!
It was great, personal, and I felt like we visited a rare and unique part of human history. The tour guides were very knowledgeable, and friendly. Frank (Francisco) augmented the tour with some iPad pictures as we drove to the site, and he seemed to know almost everything about the Mayan's and the site overall. We did arrive before almost everyone else...it's a very popular destination. The morning snack on the bus was essentially a piece of fruit, a thin (but good) ham and cheese sandwich on white, granola bar, and an apple juice. Getting there early is a definite advantage since the crowds are very low and the morning sun is low. By the time we left, it was getting very hot. I highly recommend this trip!
Francisco and Oscar are a great team. We had a great time. Our three kids enjoyed immensely and learned a lot. Chichen Itza was the ultimate multi-purpose building of it's time, a true testament to the ingenuity of the Mayas. Want to unlock some of the secrets of the Mayan civilization? Francisco, with his deep knowledge of Mayan history and easy manner, will help you. You will finish with a much deeper knowledge of this particular civilization and why they did some of the things they did like human sacrifice for example. Very Interesting! Worth every penny.
This is a must see! Our guide (Franc) was veeery good - he really enjoyed his job!! The Driver (Oscar) was also great! The best thing was that almost nobody was there in the morning and we left around noon when all others arived at 30°C :)
Frank was our amigo tour guide for early morning hotel pick up (we were the last to be picked up in the Hotel Zone at 7 a.m.) to Chichen Itza, for the personalized, small group archeologist's excursion. The air conditioned van was comfortable, our driver, Oscar, took the toll road, with one quick bathroom stop, and we were at the Wonder in two hours. Frank made the two-hour ride interesting by, verbally, giving us tons of information about the ancient Maya and allowing questions as well. He is Maya himself, which brought an extra element to his informal lecture material. We were dropped off in front of the main building to the park on the hot and humid Spring Solstice. My friend and I particularly wanted to see Chichen Itza on the solstice because of the celebratory events of the Maya, who will allow photos, during the two solstice celebrations (spring and fall). We watched the ceremony for a while, were given our tickets, and then went into the park, guided by Frank, to various specific sites, with even more information as we toured the grounds. The time went incredibly fast and we had just 20-30 minutes for personal touring time. There is so much to see at Chichen Itza that one day isn't enough, if one truly wants to explore all that it holds. I enjoyed the combination of sites and lecture information, which added greatly to the meaning of each place visited. We didn't linger much because of the time constraints, and Frank kept us moving from one structure to the next. The only disappointment was the "boxed lunch" which was a basic white bread sandwich and a juice box, given to us right after boarding the van. It would be better if the tour announced that guests should bring their own lunches or that food is available for sale on the grounds. Also, time allowed for lunch off the van would be a plus. Otherwise, it was everything an informational tour should be, and I would highly recommend it.
