We had a terrific day with Freddy, our tour guide, and Oscar, our driver. Chichen Itza is a must-see destination if you are in Cancun, and the experience did not disappoint. Freddy provided a wonderful overview of Mayan culture and is incredibly knowledgeable- as a Mayan and native of the Yucatan Peninsula, he had a terrific connection to the information that made it more personal for us. Another perk to this tour is that you really do beat the crowds- although there weren't a lot of people there while we visited, there were easily three or four times the number of people when our tour finished at 12:30 than when we started at 9:30. We got some incredible photos that would not have been possible later in the day. Also, though it goes without saying, it was much hotter at noon- so a morning visit is absolutely recommended and is worth the early start time. Also, this tour takes a toll road that is shorter and smoother than the longer routes other companies choose, so even though it's a long way from the beach we were still back mid-afternoon with plenty of hours left for laying by the pool.
My only frustration was not due to Freddy or the tour itself, but our fellow tourists- the tour starts early, and two separate groups of passengers made us wait for 15 minutes each while they finished getting ready. I think Freddy and Oscar were generous to wait for them, but if mornings aren't your thing, don't choose this tour and inconvenience other passengers. It's too good an experience to force everyone else to have a delayed start and that many more people at the site before you get there.
Excellent experience! The 6:15 tour is really recommended as we got great pictures and were back in Cancun for the afternoon. Saul ans Freddie were great and realt enjoyed the trip thanks to them!
Our experience was fantastic. Freddy Hoit and Saul took us to Chichen Itza. It was a treat from the beginning. We were supposed to meet them at the airport since our hotel was far away and they called and said they would pick us up! Then, Freddy is a Mayan descendant and he knows so much about them. He shared his heritage and knowledge with us. Then we felt very special once on site since we arrived much earlier than most people. We got the Mayan calendar for our birthdays and he even taught us the number system Mayans had. We definitely recommend the local tour operators and next time we get in Mexico we will reach out to them for our local tours. Thanks Freddy and Saul. From Kobus and Claudia :)
Frank was extremely knowledgable and Oscar very considerate. They make the tour! Definitely recommend going to Chichen Itza only with them!
Chichen itza was great and the early morning trip is the only way to enjoy it without all the crowds. Frank was great tour guide and Oscar was a great driver. Highly recommend this day trip.
perfect. early pickup. early arrival. beat the heat. learned about the mayan calendar and counting system. the history and the culture. Freddy and Saul were helpful, knowledgable. made it fun and very interesting. renewed interest in mesoamerican culture. we walked the entire complex before the vendors showed and were able to hear and see the meanings of the glyphs thanks to Freddy's explainations. well worth getting up for! if your visiting chichen itza this is the way to do it. clean, comfortable and almost like going to the museum except better. wear a hat. bring water ( it is provided but we went through it quickly). i am from Texas so i understand heat. the humidity was on par with Houston and made summers in Florida look like a cakewalk. after seeing what the big tours were providing ours was money well spent for the archaeologist tour given by Freddy!
Freddie and Oscar were very knowledgable and pleasant. Getting to the ruins early before the crowds and the heat was an amazing thing. The ruins themselves are quite impressive. Well worth it!
We loved this tour. Our Archaeologist was Frank, he was very informative and friendly, as was the driver. You will leave early, but this allows you to beat the crowds and the heat. Excellent tour!
We wanted to book a day trip from Cancun to Chichén Itzá. The hotel travel agent was very expensive and lots of other operators in Cancun were too eager to push trips on us. I booked this tour via Viator online and decided on the early morning trip (6.40am collection from hotel). Oscar drove a comfortable Mercedes minibus holding about 20 and Franceso (Frank) was a a wonderful tour guide who gave a very informative one hour talk about the Mayans in both English and Spanish en route. At the site we have a guided tour from 9am for 90 minutes then had a further 90 minutes to explore on our own.
The benefit of this tour is the early start getting to see the Mayan sites before the big coach parties arrive and before the day heats up. Chichén Itzá is hot with very little shade. Light refreshments and cold water provided but do bring more water to drink.
Great experience with a knowledgeable archaeologist. Highly recommended.
Everythjng was perfect...especially the tour guide, he was so informative. Loved getting to the place super early, it was like we had the entire place to ourselves!!
Great way to make a trip out to chichen itza without loosing a whole day. We were picked up on time, given some background on route and had 3 hours to explore, half of which was guided. We beat the crowds and left as the place was just starting to get busy. I recommend bringing water and snacks.
If the early bird really catches that worm, then Mayan archeologist/guide Freddies early bird tour of Chichen Itza shows off this World Heritage Site at its best. The downside—you have to get up early! The upside—you get there before the tourist hordes, as you will arrive just as the park opens. On the way there, you will be treated to a two hour interactive lecture about Mayan culture, history, astronomy, social order, writing and math. We learned more about the Mayan people on that trip than all the History Channel programs combined.
Special thanks to driver Oscar for a safe journey and good humor.
We liked this so much that we booked the tour of Tulum with Freddie and driver Saul, and had an equally good experience!
We want to return.
Getting to Chichen Itza early is a MUST! We left at 12 noon and the lines were incredibly long. When you get there early you have the place all to yourself and our guide was more than knowledgeable and really knew his trade. They picked us up sharply at the pickup time and we were on our way over. Took about 2 hours to get there. This place is a must-visit if you go to Cancun, and the guys that take you from the tour company are the best!
Frank and Oscar was our tour guide and driver. They promptly pick us up on time and we got a good jump start on our drive to Chichen Itza. Frank did a awesome job showing us around the Maya Ruins and giving us valuable information about the site. We spent about a 1:45 minutes with our guide and another 1:45 on our own to see more of the site. This site is a awesome place to visit and just hear the information about the Mayan people. We got some great pictures while there and was surprised at the amount of venders that come in there to sell their wares. If you want a great tour that will get you there early with great information, this is the one. Although you get a box lunch (nothing but a sandwich, juice box and small snack) I would suggest you bring some additional food with you to tide you over.
