Azapa Archaeological Excursion

Departing for the Azapa Valley, visit archaeological sites with artistic and cultural manifestations of pre-hispanic cultures, demonstrated in Geoglyphs and Petroglyphs which can be seen on the valley sides. View the Geoglyphs of Atoca and Cerro Sagrado where the Aymará Indians carried out their rites to Pachamama, the earth goddess, and their funeral sites.

Continue to the Pukará de San Lorenzo, the ruins of a defensive pre-Inca fort. On arrival at the Archaeological Museum of San Miguel de Azapa, view the important pieces of ceramic, textiles and tools of the local cultures as well as the famed mummies of Chinchorro, the oldest in the world.

Walk along the local Indian tracks at the top of the valley to Chilpe (the remains of a pre-Hispanic village) where you can see petroglyphs and burial grounds. Box lunch on the way.
