This 10-hour scenic drive from Christchurch makes stops in Mount Cook and Tekapo en route to picturesque Wanaka. After hotel pickup in the morning, your coach departs for the Canterbury Plains before heading inland to the farming township of Geraldine for a morning tea break.
Listen to live commentary on board as you make the journey across Burkes Pass, then descend toward the breathtaking glacier-fed waters of Lake Tekapo. On the lake’s remote shores stands the solitary Church of the Good Shepherd, where you’ll stop for a photo op.
A bit further, your coach skims the western shoreline of Lake Pukaki. Gaze in awe at the 12,217-foot-high (3,724-meter) Mount Cook, New Zealand's tallest mountain, situated in UNESCO-listed Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. Visit Mount Cook village at the mountain's base, with free time to explore the alpine surroundings.
Enjoy a buffet lunch here, if option selected. Let your driver know if you’d like to include an optional scenic helicopter or ski-plane flight with a snow landing (weather permitting; paid direct).
The remainder of your one-way day trip heads further south through the rugged high-country landscape of the Mackenzie Basin. Enjoy afternoon tea (own expense) in Omarama before the ascent over Lindis Pass into Central Otago.
On arrival in the small town of Tarras, you’ll transfer to a shuttle that delivers you to your destination, located on the southern shores of Lake Wanaka.
