After your cruise ship docks in Dublin, Ireland’s most populous city, get ready to see the highlights on a shore excursion with an informative local guide. Travel a short distance into the city center by comfortable coach, following the River Liffey and crossing O'Connell Bridge.
You’ll head first to O'Connell Street to see the Spire of Dublin and several famous statues as your guide offers commentary about the leaders memorialized there. Then, take a look at the General Post Office, completed in 1818 with a portico of six Greek-style columns.
Continue past the Dublin Castle, established in 1204, and catch a glimpse of the Guinness brewery – a towering brick building where the popular ale has been made since the mid-18th century. Then, head to St Patrick's Cathedral, where Gulliver’s Travels author Jonathan Swift, whose remains are buried within, served as the dean for 32 years.
Completely re-furbished by the Guinness family in the 19th century after severe damage from the Cromwellian invasion of the mid-1600s, Ireland’s national cathedral is the largest in the country. As you tour inside, learn more about its history and architecture from your guide.
Back aboard your coach, ride past the stately Christ Church Cathedral and onward toward St Stephen's Green to view the Lord Mayor's residence at Mansion House. Get out to stroll past the bustling shops of Grafton Street and see the stained glass windows of Bewley's Café, frequented by some of Ireland’s most famous writers such as Samuel Beckett and James Joyce, who mentioned the cafe in his book Dubliners.
From here, head to Trinity College, founded in 1592, to admire the amazing library, including Brian Boru's Harp – one of only three surviving medieval Gaelic harps – and other historic documents on display. If you choose, view the famous illuminated gospel, The Book of Kells (own expense).
End your day with a couple of hours of free time in Dublin to shop, eat or visit a local pub to try out the local Guinness (own expense) before being transported back to the Dublin cruise port.
